Patchwork cycling jersey made out of Lycra scraps from my classmates’ previous knit dress assignment. The patchwork for this garment is sewn together with water soluble thread. The only material sourced outside of the classroom is the zipper and ribbing for the collar stand.
The athletic industry is one of the biggest clothing industries in the world. As the athletic industry continues to grow, so does the production of clothing for the industry. Lycra is a plastic material found in most to all garments made for athletic wear. Lycra is a non recyclable material that takes 20-200 years to decompose, therefore, these garments are non recyclable within our lifetime. The idea for this cycling jersey is to create a deconstructing garment out of scraps of Lycra that will eventually fall off the garment through sweat, or any liquid like rain that may fall onto the jersey. The scraps will then fall back to the ground, where they eventually would’ve ended up anyways, as Lycra is non recyclable. This garment is a performance piece, intended to bring awareness to the non sustainable fabrics that are used in everyday wear, and to bring awareness to the acknowledgement of non recyclable materials that the fashion industry continues to exploit.
