RVA ROCK 1v1 Breaking Jam // Judges + Cypher King // Queen // Kid SHOWCASE //.
Our judge showcase at RVA ROCK was a cypher based. I was inspired by GMU’s Break The Yard Jam. Though I’m sure they weren’t the originators of this idea I was nevertheless inspired by the energy exchange between the judges and audience. I wanted to try this myself. The twist was that I was going to announce the winners of the cypher King and Queen IN cypher. I wanted the ones who put in the sweat and love of the dance into the cypher to have a moment in the spotlight. It was also important to me to acknowledge one of our youth as well because they are out here cyphering too and we need to let them know in some way that they are doing a good job and that this scene isn’t just for the older demographic. We all share the floor. We all share the same nerves and anxieties. We all hear the same songs together. We just need a little encouragement so that we can express what we experience the right way 😤

I wanted to try something. I took a survey at RVA ROCK breaking jam. What I did was set aside a an area for competitors/spectators to walk up to a table and answer a few questions regarding breaking and hip-hop culture. I wrote a prompt to the idea asking anyone who was open to it to answer any of the many questions written out on these stickers placed on manilla folders. You would write your answer on the card closest to the question and drop your answer into a box.
My idea was to not only have an area in the venue for people to gravitate to when they might have felt there was a slow pace in the jam, but to also gauge how people actually felt about the culture in the jam. I want to present the answers to you because I think it is important to not only acknowledge people for their skills and talent but for their actual feelings/intellect/emotions. I don’t understand how we can make improvements on the culture by only focusing on skills, layout, payouts. I believe to move a CULTURE forward. You have to understand how the individuals think and feel. So this data isn’t just for me. It’s for everyone. A reference to take into your next big or small endeavor. I hope this makes sense and I hope this reaches who it needs to! Feel free to take this idea and flip it your own way in your respective circles!

Thank you to everyone who took their time to come and make this event an event to remember. From set up to clean up. From Prelim to Finals. It was a joyful learning experience being able to bring this idea to fruition and sharing moments with you all. Special thanks to @rva_crescent_collective for providing such a fun and unique space for use to utilize. I am super proud of my brother @bboy_gohan and the turn out for his stretching and mobility workshop. Having Richmond’s own DJ @justroyal_mst spin for us at RVA ROCK was a complete honor and I was grateful to have him come and cater to our audio landscape. I’m thankful for our judges @bboy_gohan@bboysykes and @johnnyboii_efx for making the trip to the city and supporting me throughout the day. I couldn’t have had a better doorwoman handling incoming competitors and attendees. My baby @ebonylstill 💕 Shoutout to my 1st and 2nd place winners of the 1v1 Breaking battle! @choyze_st and @bboyroach1 . These two are continuously working hard and representing themselves in their dance with confidence and clear intent and it was awesome getting to watch them climb up the brackets to finals.
