Es handelt sich hierbei um eine Organisation, die sich der Erhaltung der Biodiversität Guatemalas und der menschlichen Entwicklung des Landes verschrieben hat. Durch Forschung, Bildung und den Schutz endemischer Ökosysteme wie auch durch die Zusammenarbeit mit örtlichen Gemeinden verbindet sich Naturschutz mit Umweltbildung, umweltfreundlichen Arbeitsplätzen und der Erhaltung unzähliger bedrohter Arten.

The project we support together with @wilhelma_stuttgart to protect the Campbell's tree snake (𝘈𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪) is run by FUNDESGUA, which is short for the Foundation for the Endangered Species of Guatemala. This is an organisation dedicated to the conservation of Guatemala’s biodiversity and the country’s human development. Through research, education and the protection of endemic ecosystems, as well as through collaboration with local communities, nature conservation is combined with environmental education, green jobs and the conservation of countless endangered species.

Jeden 3. Freitag im Mai findet der internationale Tag der bedrohten Arten statt! Hierzu gibt es weltweit Veranstaltungen, um auf unzählige bedrohten Arten aufmerksam zu machen, über sie zu lernen und natürlich Maßnahmen zu ihrem Schutz zu besprechen und zu treffen. Ins Leben gerufen wurde die Aktion bereits im Jahr 2006 von der Endangered Species Coalition. In diesem Jahr findet dieser Tag daher schon zum 21. Mal statt.
Wir bei der ZGAP haben uns auf den Schutz und Erhalt bedrohter Arten spezialisiert, die nur wenig im Fokus der Öffentlichkeit stehen und daher oft nur geringe bis gar keine Aufmerksamkeit erhalten. Dazu gehören etwa die Amazonas-Delfine (𝘐𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴). Bereits vor rund 30 Jahren stufte die IUCN sie als gefährdet ein - inzwischen ist klar, dass sie nicht nur stark gefährdet sind, sondern ihre Anzahl stetig weiter abnimmt. Zusammen mit dem @zooschwerin haben wir daher bereits im letzten Jahr ein Projekt zu ihrem Schutz gefördert. ❤️🌊🐬

The International Endangered Species Day takes place annually on the third Friday in May! Events are held around the world to raise awareness of countless endangered species, to learn about them and, of course, to discuss and implement measures for their protection. The initiative was launched back in 2006 by the Endangered Species Coalition. This year, therefore, marks the 21st anniversary of the event.
Here at ZGAP, we specialise in the protection and conservation of endangered species that receive little public attention and therefore often attract little or no interest. These include, for example, the Amazon river dolphin (𝘐𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴). The IUCN classified them as endangered around 30 years ago – it is now clear that they are not only critically endangered, but their numbers are continuing to decline steadily. 🦜 Im Red-fronted Macaw Community Reserve in Bolivien wurden zwei neue Beobachtungshütten für den stark bedrohten Rotohrara fertiggestellt. Eine liegt an den Brutklippen, die andere am Boden bei den Futterplätzen – für Naturerlebnisse mit minimaler Störung. Die Hütten fügen sich durch ihre Bauweise harmonisch in die Landschaft ein und wurden mit Unterstützung der lokalen Gemeinden gebaut. Sie stärken den nachhaltigen Ökotourismus und finanzieren Schutzmaßnahmen vor Ort. Zur Unterstützung dieses Projekts arbeiten wir mit dem @vogelparkmarlow , dem @zoodresden und unserem @zgap_papageienfonds zusammen. 🌿🦜

🦜 Two new observation huts for the critically endangered Red-fronted macaw have been completed at the Red-fronted Macaw Community Reserve in Bolivia. One is situated on the nesting cliffs, the other on the ground near the feeding stations – ensuring a nature experience with minimal disturbance. Thanks to their design, the huts blend harmoniously into the landscape and were built with the support of local communities. They promote sustainable ecotourism and fund conservation measures on the ground. We support this project together with @vogelparkmarlow@zoodresden and our @zgap_papageienfonds . 🌿🦜

Vietnam: 40 Jahre Cat Ba Nationalpark / 40 Years of Cat Ba National Park; Engl. text below
Als ich auf dem Weg zur Konferenz nach Marokko war, fand im Cat Ba Nationalpark in Vietnam eine Zeremonie bzw. Konferenz besonderer Art statt – nämlich der 40-jährige Geburtstag des Nationalparks. Unser Team war natürlich auch dabei, so hielten Dr. Cuong The Pham und Dr. Hai Ngoc Ngo Vorträge über unsere Biodiversitätsforschung auf Cat Ba und Neuentdeckungen. Aber auch über unsere Artenschutzarbeit gemeinsam mit dem Nationalpark auf Cat Ba – und seine zentrale Rolle beim Schutz endemischer Arten, wie der im Video gezeigte Cat Ba Tigergecko. Zu den Errungenschaften im Artenschutz zählen auch der Aufbau von Erhaltungszuchten sowohl bei uns in Köln, als auch im Melinh Zentrum für Biodiversität sowie auf der Insel Cat Ba und sogar schon erste Wiederauswilderungen vor Ort. Und natürlich die Schaffung nationaler wie internationaler Schutzstatuten (Red Data Book, IUCN Red List, CITES) sowie unsere Zuarbeit zum UNESCO-Welterbe Status.

While I was on my way to a conference in Morocco, a special ceremony—or rather, a special event—took place at Cat Ba National Park in Vietnam: the National Park’s 40th anniversary. Our team was, of course, there as well, so Dr. Cuong The Pham and Dr. Hai Ngoc Ngo gave presentations on our biodiversity research on Cat Ba and new discoveries. They also spoke about our species conservation work in collaboration with the Cat Ba National Park—and its central role in the protection of endemic species such as the Cat Ba tiger gecko shown in the clip. Among our achievements in species conservation are the establishment of conservation breeding programs both in Cologne and at the Melinh Center for Biodiversity, as well as on Cat Ba Island, and even the first releases into the wild. And, of course, the creation of national and international conservation statutes (Red Data Book, IUCN Red List, CITES) as well as our contributions toward UNESCO World Heritage status.

Die Campbells-Baumschleiche (𝘈𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪) kommt nur im Osten Guatemalas vor. Hier lebt die tagaktive Echse in eher höher gelegenen Regionen und bevorzugt daher kühlere Temperaturen. Die IUCN stuft sie als von ihrer Ausrottung bedroht ein, nachdem man bereits von ihrer Ausrottung ausging und erst 2009 einige Exemplare wiederentdeckte. Zusammen mit der @wilhelma_stuttgart fördern wir aktuell ein Projekt zum Schutz der Baumschleiche und ihres Lebensraumes. Gezielt wird die Lokalbevölkerung eingebunden, um durch Schulprogramme und Workshops mehr über ihre Umwelt zu lernen, und aktiv zu ihrem Erhalt und Wiederherstellung ihres Lebensraumes beitzuragen.

Campbell’s alligator lizard (𝘈𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪) is endemic to eastern Guatemala. Here, it is thought to inhabit higher-altitude regions and therefore prefers cooler temperatures of below 30 degrees. The IUCN classifies it as critically endangered, the species having previously been presumed extinct before a few individuals were rediscovered in 2009. Together with @wilhelma_stuttgart , we are therefore supporting a project to protect Campbell’s alligator lizard and its habitat. The project involves men, women and children from the region, who not only learn about their environment through school programmes and workshops, for example, but also actively contribute to its conservation and restoration.

Drei Korallenschnabel-Hornvögel stecken die Schnäbel zusammen. Ihre Art, die von der IUCN als von ihrer Ausrottung bedroht eingestuft wird, gehört zu einer von zwei hochbedrohten Hornvogelarten auf den Westlichen Visayas-Inseln auf den Philippinen. Dieses Projekt ist Teil unserer Zusammenarbeit mit der Talarak-Foundation, die sich dem Schutz von auf den Philippinen endemischen Arten widmet.

Bis heute gelten Hyänen oft als schmutzig, gierig, grausam und wenig intelligent. Der Welt-Hyänen-Tag dient dazu, sich tiefergehend mit den verschiedenen Hyänenarten und ihrer Erhaltung zu beschäftigen. Wir von der ZGAP unterstützen beispielsweise zusammen mit der @wilhelma_stuttgart ein Projekt zur Erforschung der Streifenhyäne in Tadschikistan. Während die IUCN diese lediglich als potentiell gefährdet einstuft, ist sie regional von der Ausrottung bedroht. In Tadschikistan werden etwa nur noch weniger als 30 Tiere in ihrem ursprünglichen Lebensraum vermutet. Hauptbedrohung für sie bilden die direkte Verfolgung und Wilderei durch den Menschen, nicht zuletzt aufgrund des bereits erwähnten schlechten Rufes der Tiere und den mit ihnen verbundenen Aberglauben.

To this day, hyenas are often seen as dirty, greedy, cruel and not very intelligent. World Hyena Day aims to draw attention to the different species of hyena and their conservation.
We at ZGAP, for example, are supporting a project in collaboration with @wilhelma_stuttgart to research the striped hyena in Tajikistan. Whilst the IUCN classifies it merely as ‘Vulnerable’, it is regionally threatened with extinction. In Tajikistan, for instance, fewer than 30 individuals are thought to remain in their original habitat. The main threats are persecution and poaching by humans, not least due to the animals’ aforementioned poor reputation and the superstitions associated with them.

Ein 𝘈𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘪𝘨𝘮𝘢𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘴 liegt versteckt auf einem Ast. Die Echse - hier abgebildet übrigens ein Weibchen - gehört zur Familie der Riesenanolis. Bekanntere Verwandte von ihr kommen auf ganz Kuba vor, diese Art jedoch wird nur selten gesichtet und lebt dazu ausschließlich auf der Insel Cayo Francés. Bereits 2021 haben wir zusammen mit der DGHT daher ein Projekt zur Erforschung der Lebens- und Brutbedingungen von 𝘈𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘪𝘨𝘮𝘢𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘴 gefördert, an deren Ende die Ausweisung der gesamten Insel als Schutzgebiet stand.

A female 𝘈𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘪𝘨𝘮𝘢𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘴 rests hidden on a branch. The little lizard is part of the Anole family. Relatives of her exist all over Cuba, but sightings of this particular species are rare, particularly since they live only on the island of Cayo Francés. Durch gezielte Projekte in über 50 Ländern versuchen wir daher, diese Arten und ihre schwindenden Lebensräume bewusst zu unterstützen, und durch Projekte und Kampagnen wie das @zootierdesjahres gezielt Aufmerksamkeit auf sie zu lenken. Hierfür arbeiten wir mit Zoos und NGOs auf der ganzen Welt zusammen.

At ZGAP, our work focuses particularly on species that are often overlooked. Many people are aware of the threat to tigers and elephants, but species like the Javan warty pig, the northern river terrapine and the Philippine cockatoo remain relatively unknown. 🐖🐢🦜
Through targeted projects in over 50 countries, we therefore try to consciously support these species and their dwindling habitats, and draw attention to them through projects such as the @zootierdesjahres campaign. For this reason, we work with zoos and NGOs around the world.
