One of the original metal tinned Sadomaoistan debut cassettes found its way into my mailbox 🥰 This was sent to me by Ivar Friis’ sister and I guess it was found in his belongings after he sadly died of AIDS in 1992. Even on an almost nonexistent shoestring budget we made the most of this release by packing 50-60 copies into empty film tins. All text for the artwork was done with typewriting and letraset (google it!) on xeroxed copies of photos we had collected from books. The graphics were done on transparent plastic, handcut and glued to the tins with the worst smelling spray glue in existence. A few of these rarities are still in circulation so grab one if you ever come across one. They are a statement of the last days of DIY - by that I mean: we had to do it ourselves from financial reasons. It wasn’t a choice from esthetics, fashion or style. The cassette/tin was first released by @tore_stemland on hiss Requiem lable. All tracks are now available on the Terror Incognita album. Design and mastering work: Sadomaoistan “Terror Ingonita / Retroskopi” - massive reissue/retrospective 2LP set documenting the two phases of this seminal subversive Norwegian project, helmed by @halvard_haldorsen . The first LP is from their 80’s raw industrial no wave punk band era, the second of their reincarnated 90’s left field techno performance outfit. Both are essential pieces of Norwegian underground music history. The mastering and design were as thorough and extensive as any box set project I’ve been involved in, and an absolute joy to work on. In September 2025, Snick Snack Music, in collaboration with Zen Feedbacker, released a monumental package of material from the legendary Norwegian queer post-punk and
electronic pioneers Sadomaoistan, in the form of two albums: Terror Incognita and
Retroskopi. Terror Incognita compiles, for the first time, material from the band’s early no
wave and industrial period, while Retroskopi is a restored and reworked version of their only official album — the dark opus Retroskopi from 1997. Remastered and redesigned by Lasse Marhaug, the albums finally illuminate a long-neglected but important part of Norwegian LGBTQ culture and electronic music history.

Now, founding member Halvard Haldorsen has invited both his contemporaries from Norway’s early-1990s electronic underground and key figures from today’s local scene to rework material from these albums. EP3 continues where EP1 and EP2 left off, presenting remixes by influential artists from the dark synth-pop and club worlds, reaffirming Sadomaoistan’s place in Norway’s long tradition of trailblazing experimental music.
With this third EP, they trace their roots back to the thriving EBM and synth scene they were part of in the 1990s.

The title refers to a paradox, questioning the relationship between a whole and the parts that make up the whole. Likewise, this track had its parts changed numerous times. Yet the idea remained the same, a sound mosaic of dreams and dread.
This is the last piece of Bird/Worm music. Next up is something else entirely.
