The overall intention is to create a piece of inhabited landscape that respects the views and privacy from neighbours homes, but also creates new beautiful spaces within the plot, at the same time as creating a comfortable home with almost no net annual carbon footprint.
Carbon footprint— on balance the new home should generate as much electricity as it uses over a year. In the summer the house may export electricity to the National Grid, and import from the grid in winter. It is anticipated that the use of local or UK bulk low embodied CO2 materials will be offset by modest surplus of renewable energy harvested each year. Over the lifetime of the building we anticipate the entire home having a net zero carbon footprint. .

Happy Birthday BedZED, 15 years on!✨
Completed in 2002, BedZED is a community of 82 homes, 18 live/work units and 1,560m2 of workspace and community facilities built for the Peabody Trust in the London Borough of Sutton. In putting together designs and proposals for BedZED, the ZEDteam tried to reconcile a higher-quality affordable lifestyle and work style with a step-change reduction in carbon footprint in the middle of an outer London dormitory suburb.

The Zero Bills Home on site at Hastings. Electricity is generated by the roof integrated solar panels - The ZED roof. As well as generating renewable energy, the roof also provides a weatherproof surface, thus negating the need for separate roof. It is also transmits daylight, and the designs feature a portion of the top floor which is in effect an elevated conservatory, or a solar loft.
