At 13, Zed was already behind a camera in Ghana, filming his friends the way Marvel and DC filmed their heroes - finding the extraordinary in the people right in front of him. That instinct never left. A graduate of the Beijing Film Academy, Zed has spent over 15 years crafting stories across music videos, documentaries, and branded content, with a body of work that spans Africa, Asia, and the United States. His films are grounded in identity, heritage, and the layered realities of modern African life - honest, human stories told with visual precision. But his contribution to African cinema doesn’t stop at the screen. After returning to Ghana following a decade in China, Zed noticed a glaring gap: African filmmakers were being expected to compete without access to the tools that make competition possible. His response was Cinetek, a film equipment sourcing and supply company now putting industry-standard gear in the hands of African creatives across the continent. In this interview, Zed talks about the structural barriers facing African filmmakers, why the industry has a visibility problem it needs to own, and what it really means to tell African stories on African terms.
