a statement from the film.factory family on the passing of Béla Tarr We are a family. A crazy, fucked up, utopian filmmaking family. And, now, dad is gone. We were called to film.factory, and to Béla, by a belief in the transformative power of cinema. That the creation of cinema could be a radical act of love and defiance in a world that so clearly needs more of both. For people with such a belief, being with Béla, day in and day out, was like ending a long day of work on the hottest of summer days with a cold beer in the company of friends. This sense of camaraderie and community was fostered by Béla and his vision of film.factory: a worldwide collection of filmmakers living together, collaborating together, eating together, falling in love together, and making together. He would push and prod to try and get your voice and viewpoint to emerge from the language of the film. Battle you with his thoughts and ideas on the project. Forcing you to clarify in your own mind exactly what you were trying to do with the film. But, most of all, he would push us all towards tenderness, radical empathy, freedom and a humor with which to view the world and the movies we make within it. We will all continue to move forward with such an orientation to filmmaking and to the world. And we will continue to make films for, if you knew Béla, you would know nothing would satisfy him more than to have his kids continue the work on the shop floor of film. In the factory of cinema. In the mill of the movies. Punch in in the morning. Punch out at night. Every single day. Working in the plant of moving image and sound. Punch in. Punch out. Punch in. Punch out. Listen. Film. Edit. Listen. Film. Edit. Never losing sight of the freedom in the act. The laughter and joy in the creation. The tenderness to the world. You were our North Star. But, more than that, you were family. We will love and miss you always, Béla. Here’s to listening to life. Now we just go and do… film.factory - Sarajevo, BiH - 2013-2016

Lesia Diak: Berlinale Talents 2026 We are proud to announce that our director and producer Lesia Diak @lesyadyak has been selected for Berlinale Talents 2026 @berlinaletalents . This incredible opportunity enables a Ukrainian talent to further her career within one of the world’s most inspiring communities of filmmakers and artists. Lesia is currently in production and post-production on her short experimental film My Days Are Being Chopped (produced by DramaFree, co-produced by Rua Escura, André Gil Mata and Warehouse Collective, Simona Jerala), while also developing her short fiction film Shuttered Ice, supported by a Documenting Ukraine grant, together with Anna Kapustina (Albatros Communicos). Through her work, Lesia continues to speak openly about uncomfortable subjects — personal loss and sacrifice, vulnerability, and the ongoing, unjust Russian war against Ukraine, with its relentless attempt to erase culture, memory, and soul from Ukrainian cities and villages. As Lesia writes in her Berlinale Talents application: “My greatest ‘talent’ is the ability to listen deeply — to people, to silence, to wounded landscapes. This shapes my documentary practice and helps me preserve a sense of humanity in a highly competitive environment. My background in project management makes me a disciplined artist, while my love for poetry helps me approach stories through layers of subtext. In development, editing, or creative dialogue, I bring honesty and a dedication to telling ambivalent stories that express deep pain through humor, resilience, and empathy.” We can’t wait to see Lesia connect, exchange, and continue shaping bold, humane cinema on the international stage. #BerlinaleTalents #Berlinale2026 #UkrainianCinema #DramaFree #MyDaysAreBeingChopped #ShutteredIce #DirectorsJourney #CreativeResilience
