-Introducing my first screendance film, which was selected to be part of the @jomba_dance festival, yay💫! “Wake up” (2023) demonstrates an awakening, the opening of the third eye, the expansion of our vision, escaping the ways of the system, rebelling from control under patriarchal and its single scape of sight and vision. Using Greek mythical being, Cyclops, as a metaphor of single sight and limited vision of the patriarchal system we exist in, with this screendance film I aim to demonstrate the yearning to find the true self, to re-define the self, free from the pre-determined roles of society’s rigid narrative. True emancipation only comes from the expansion of perspective, of vision, of self: Rise and shine 👁

•WELELA KUMTHANDAZO• “From a shared conversation over lunch with Jojo, this vision was sparked by our shared love for art, storytelling and Jazz music. And as all great things take trusting in Devine timing, this project has been marinating and maturing with patience, dedication and alignment. “The Wave has Passed” Standing out in South African waters with the famous Zan twins was a real privilege. It was the final chapter in a long term collaboration that had begun last year. The twins and I had met up for coffee and shared the desire to work together, leading to the conceptualising of this special project🌊 A huge shoutout to @khanyisatheartist for the beautiful makeup!🙌
