LIFE LESSON #936 - NO ONE KNOWS ANYTHING (about your specific process) 8 years ago I was living in NYC because a friend of mine was kind enough to let me stay in her room while she was gone for a few months. Before I left Florida lots of comics told me to not even bother with the big clubs in Manhattan because they are a rip off and impossible to deal with and to stick with the Brooklyn rooms more associated with “alt style” and “Indie vibes”. I’ve never considered myself a certain type of comedian. I just try to be as funny as possible where and when I can. However, I was also still not sure of myself and who I was as a comic, so I took the advice. Night after night I’d sit in basements and coffee shops and the back rooms of bars waiting with 70+ comedians to do 3 minutes to no audience. After about a month straight of making no headway, and making no friends I felt like I was going crazy and just needed to do something different. I went to the Stand Comedy Club at the old location in Manhattan. The Stand was great because they let comics sit in and watch if the room isn’t full. Upstairs you could sit and chat with headliners if you happened to meet them at the bar. It was almost unbelievable there was so much access. I met a bunch of big New York comics there at different points just hanging out. Soder, Glazer, Normand, List, etc. ANYWAY, I finally decided to say screw it and go to the mic. I went up at 5:30pm to just comics and had a great set, then immediately after the host got me booked on a show. I ended up having a great set and met a bunch of cool people. New York wasn’t for me, but I learned some valuable lessons. Mainly, people will project onto you their own experiences. They might mean well, but sometimes you just gotta throw yourself into the deep end and see what happens. One persons struggle might be your catalyst. One mic i was told was a waste of time got me booked. Don’t be afraid of failing. Nobody really cares except for you. Take the chance.
