David Ogilvy called this the best headline he ever wrote: the famous 1958 Rolls-Royce “ticking clock” ad. Except he didn’t actually write it. He cites in the copy that it was lifted from a technical article. And even that wasn’t original…nearly the same headline had already appeared 25 years earlier in a 1933 Pierce-Arrow ad.
In a completely unnecessary act of fixation, I tracked down both: the original Rolls ad featured in Ogilvy on Advertising (there were several versions of the ad with the same headline) and the earlier Pierce-Arrow version.
Found some old pictures of my ‘69 Road Runner from when I sold it around 1998. If the guy who bought it sees this, I’ll happily give you a full refund if you want to return it.

1973 Seiko 6138-7000 slide rule auto chronograph. It’s calculatin’ days are behind it…though I don’t know how many days behind since the date wheel is stuck too.

Another proud dad moment this weekend. @abi.bernstein ’s Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition at @cuartmuseum , featuring her “(in)animate” show. So much work went into this installation, the scale and amazing detail was incredible. Watching the attendees at the opening discover the hidden whimsical surprises (I’m sure I didn’t find them all) and hearing them try to figure out the techniques she used was a highlight. An inspiring conceptual exploration, flawlessly executed. Congratulations, Abi…truly talented.
