The first installment of a series highlighting the various facets of femininity imposed by a system where sexism is omnipresent. We are always told that red is the color of love, sexiness, anger, carnality, and desire. This shade, often associated with gender stereotypes, symbolizes both passion and strength, as well as struggle and resistance. The choice of red as a common thread is therefore no coincidence.
Here, red is a declaration and a call for emancipation, a rebellion against the unrealistic and oppressive expectations placed on women. Through this work, I invite Zeyn - the model - to reclaim the public space surrounding her the way she wishes, to express herself freely in her bodily movements and facial expressions, without any constraint or judgment.
“Manspreading,” a posture generally attributed to men to assert their dominance and occupy public spaces, ironically represents the reclamation of a posture that is forbidden to her. Through this simple position, Zeyn defies gender norms and asserts her place in a world where she is often a minority and marginalized.
This is a tribute to all of those who dare to reclaim their space and identity, thus transforming the symbols of submission into tools of liberation. Rebel Dolls calls for reflection on our position as women in public spaces. So to all my sisters who are scared to take too much space in a male-dominated world, don’t cross your legs anymore, don’t shut your mouth, laugh out loud if you want to, and never doubt yourself. <3
