// You are in a Kitchen Filled with Plants as the Sun Streams Inwards, the title track and first single from our forthcoming record comes out this Friday, May 8th on @littlemangorecordings // // The title and its main melody originates from June 2019. Devin wasn’t living in LA at the time, so when we’d meet, we’d always try to record as much music as possible. For this particular occasion we planned to trip some psychedelics, so we went to the nursery and bought a bunch of cacti and succulents to provide some vibes. The best light in my shared eagle rock apt at the time was in the kitchen, so we decided to set up all our gear in there // // a few hrs in when everything was really kicking- tea kettles/electronics blaring, mushrooms floating, me and Devin trying to bow anything with a hint of resonance, my roommates and their dad showed up unexpectedly to grab a jacket only to find their kitchen covered in a bunch of small plants, synthesizers, and a large no-input mixing board- we definitely felt like total weirdos for five minutes. But at the very end of day, Devin settled into a drone and I found a really simple 5 note melody on the gtr I could play over and over… // // nothing ever came of those kitchen recordings, but a year later I came back to that five note melody over a drone and I worked it into a new tune. That ended up being one of the first tunes I played duo with my boy @thereugotis as OZ and the very first song that Devin and I jammed with @lucaslenny1 in a small classroom in CalArts. Nearly seven years later, the title adorns the bright blue LP cover I hold in my hands with a version recorded by our sextet // -Zac // You are in a Kitchen Filled with Plants as the Sun Streams Inwards - single out Friday May 8th, album out May 29th on @littlemangorecordings //

This Saturday we are excited to finally reissue our self-titled debut album on vinyl via Little Mango Recordings // limited lathe cut, edition of 12 // This album originally came out in November 2019 as an edition of 100 cassettes // it features American primitive guitar, acoustic bass, layers of different instrumental overdubs, and a trove of field recordings // mostly us experimenting over a number of years in eagle rock, mammoth lakes, calarts, val verde, and elsewhere // layering it with the sounds of our family, friends, and surroundings // We had these records cut in early 2020, but once the pandemic hit, the release became indefinitely tabled // even though the world seems just as troubled now as it did then, it seems like the right time to let these small documents out into the air // the album still sounds beautiful, even more personal // especially as we look to release our sextet album later this year // We’ll be out celebrating this Saturday, June 28th in an amphitheater in eagle rock // 4pm // hit us up for the coordinates and the details // it’s a beautiful spot, it’d be great to see you there // it only took us 5 years, but here we are… // 🐋🌻 //

After graduating from the Berklee College of Music, Tom Chandler studied with the great Nubian oud master Hamza El Din. He has performed and recorded mystical Turkish Sufi music with the Latif Bolat Ensemble, written music for, recorded and performed with the medieval music group Heliotrope, and been a member of the West African-inspired folk group the Palm Wine Boys from 1993-2006. He has led his own jazz-Arabic fusion groups, composes extended drone music, and explores the mystical side of extreme distortion guitar music, in a continuing search for musical transcendence, or “tarab”. Each Ritual Ashing performance is an intuitive process of becoming and unbecoming, realized through waves of textural exploration, resonant drones, and modal improvisation. Using an earthy palette of acoustic instrumentation through looper pedals and electronic effects, this vibrational practice conjures spiritual energies from within, while simultaneously seeking a deeper harmony with the dynamic ecology of the Mojave desert where the music is created. Elif Dinçer and Zac Burgenbauch are an improvising duo from Los Angeles.
