One of the most critical emergency services operated by the County is 911, which is a division of the Monroe County Public Safety Department. The Monroe County 911 Center is a centralized Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for all calls for emergency services within the County of Monroe. The Center is the point of reception and response to 911 dialed calls, dispatch of emergency equipment, and relay or transfer of service calls to the appropriate public service agencies within Monroe County. Calling 911 helps those in the County to in need of emergency assistance to receive immediate access to the appropriate police, fire or ambulance agency. Monroe County is also the first 911 Center in New York State to accept text messages from all four major carriers (Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint)! Check out this video on the County website to see more about the resources offered through 911, like MonroeAlert.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to pause, reflect, and reaffirm our commitment to one another. A healthy mind is not a luxury it is essential. It is the foundation for how we show up for our families, our work, and our community. Yet too often, mental health is carried in silence. Here in Monroe County, we believe that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. It means having the courage to say, “I matter too.” This month, I encourage you to check in with yourself and with those around you. Make space for rest. Make space for conversation. And most importantly, make space for healing. Together, let’s continue building a community where mental health is prioritized, resources are accessible, and no one feels alone.

Over the past year, we’ve listened closely to caregivers and professionals in our community. Inspired by the experiences of Latina professionals caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s, we’re proud to launch a Latino Professional Caregiver Support Group via Zoom. This culturally responsive space supports professionals navigating dementia care—personally or professionally—especially those serving Latino/Hispanic communities. Conversations are welcome in both English and Spanish. Upcoming Sessions (Zoom): • April 23 | 6:00–7:30 PM • May 21 | 6:00–7:30 PM • June 18 | 6:00–7:30 PM In-person gatherings coming this summer.

It was truly my honor to join members of the MCDC Equity Caucus in a community clean-up in recognition of Earth Day. I was especially happy to share this experience with my mom and son. He was super excited to share with me the importance of caring for our Earth! Special shout out to Legislator Sue Hughes-Smith for coordinating and making this act of service possible. #happyearthday

In learning more about the Monroe County Legislature and other County Departments, it's important to firstly understand the role of the County Executive, Adam Bello. The County Executive is the chief executive officer and administrative head of the Monroe County government. County Executive Bello and his team develop policies, propose legislation to the County Legislature, appoint department heads, direct the preparation of the annual operating budget and the Capital Improvement Program, and coordinate the management of all departments. The County Executive also represents County interests to the local, state and federal governments. To find out more about the County Executive's office/website take a look at this video. And follow along in the coming weeks as we introduce the roles of and resources from different County Departments!

Earth Day is a call to remember why we are here. We were not placed on this earth just to consume, rush, and move on. We are here to protect life, to care for what grows, and to leave this world gentler than we found it. To honor the earth is to honor the gift of being alive.

Together with American Heart Association, the Rochester City Council, and the Monroe County Legislature are proud to recognize individuals in our community who have stepped up in life-saving moments. If you know someone who has used CPR to save a life, now is the time to honor them. We are seeking nominations for the Heartsaver Hero award. It is our way of saying thank you for performing the heroic act of CPR, a critical link in our chain of survival. We want to recognize the heroes that have stepped in to help save a life during an emergency. You have not only helped save a life within your community, but you are also partnering with the American Heart Association to improve the survival rate of citizens who receive bystander CPR. Special thanks to Legislator Dave Long, Chairman of Public Safety, for his collaboration and for helping ensure we have the time and space to recognize these everyday heroes. 🗓️ Nominations are due by May 1st Nomination form: /210895112919964 🔗 More information: /en/training-programs/community-programs/heartsaver-hero Help us celebrate the people who make Rochester stronger, safer, and more compassionate. #Pleaseshare
