Reintro! 👋🏻 I’m Yume Kitasei, and I write adult science fiction and other speculative stuff - short and long. My novels include Saltcrop, The Stardust Grail, and The Deep Sky, all standalone novels published by @flatiron_books and @harpervoyager_uk . My fourth novel, Envoy, is forthcoming from @torbooks in 2027. I’m Japanese and American and grew up in the space between cultures, a theme that recurs in my fiction. I love reading most genres from lit fic to spec fic and recommending books (check out my newsletter in bio). 🚀 The Deep Sky: an interstellar mission is knocked off course in deep space by a mysterious explosion and the perp might be one of the crew. 🐙 The Stardust Grail: a former museum thief turned grad student agrees to one last job to find a mysterious artifact that could save an alien race from extinction…and possibly doom humanity in the process. Indiana Jones x Star Trek. ⛵️ Saltcrop: two sisters sail across a climate-ravaged ocean to find their missing sister. For fans of Station Eleven and Wild Dark Shore. 🐋 Envoy: an international crew of astronauts gather for the reunion celebration of a first contact mission when one of them is murd3red. Who’s after them and what did they really bring back? Arrival x The Paris Apartment.

Happy 1st birthday to THE STARDUST GRAIL, my Indiana Jones x Star Trek space opera. It’s a story of friendship; exploration of the inconceivably vast, weird, and wonderful universe; and the inevitable harm and beauty caused when two cultures meet. I had so much fun writing it I thought I must be doing something wrong. I tell people it was my “revenge travel” book, and the last year has indeed been full of adventure, meeting internet friends for the first time and making new ones, career firsts, attending conferences and festivals, and eating lots of ice cream. Highlights pictured: 1. Holding a stacking of my TSG paperbacks. 2. Showing off TSG’s interstellar nodal map at the front of the book at the launch event. 3. Going around Queens one day with @flatiron_books bestie @geekomnivore This is me signing a stack of books at @bookculturelic 4. Showing off my huge stack of The Stardust Grail and The Deep Sky at @strandbookstore 5. With @victormanibo for our joint event in Westchester @womrathbooks . Last year, I learned I LOVE joint events, and I am definitely going to do a bunch more of those this year. 6. Stopping by @mystgalaxybooks with @okosunreads and @sarahmughal769 was a bucket list I needed to check off when I was invited to ALA in San Diego. 7. I finally met @emilyjane.author in person for a joint event @joyandmatts in Cincinnati, something we both had wanted to do since we were debuts the prior year. 8. One of the most fun panels I’ve ever done was with @jscalzi and @tobias.buckell at @columbusbookfestival 9. I went to WorldCon in Glasgow with @kylieleebaker and my older sister. (My sis and I had last gone 20 years prior when we were teenagers and fans, so it felt full circle. And then I got to go down to Bath and do a retreat with internet writer friends I’ve known for years now but never met. 10. I got to sign books at NYC Comicon! and run around the hall briefly with @katiewuwrites 11. Lastly, I went back to talk to students at my alma mater @stuyvesanthighschool with my old teacher Annie Thoms and signed my books in the school library. 🥲 Tl;Dr it’s been an amazing year and books are really just an excuse to hang out with people

This is my new favorite photo. I’ve been delinquent in my thank yous because my debut week was just so much to process emotionally. But here’s where I will start: 1. TY, @marycmoore , my agent, who took a chance on my first book (not this one) and believed in me before anyone else. You were determined to make sure my debut was big & special, even when I admit I was doubtful at times that I’d get a book deal. 2. TY @maxinescharles , my amazing editor, who plucked up THE DEEP SKY and made it what it is. Also you are fun to hang out with. 3. TY to the @flatiron_books team for making sure the book got out there in bookstores and libraries and in people’s hands! And Frances who copy edited my book with care and meticulousness. 4. TY to early reviewers!! You took the time to read the typo-filled version and post about it even though you’d never heard of me, and I’m so grateful. 5. TY booksellers and librarians for your early enthusiasm. Every time you tag me, my heart gets a jolt. You make the magic happen. 6. TY to my family and friends who have let me blab in about this book for YEARS without complaint and made my debut week an amazing week. You’ve bought (multiple!) copies of my book even if you aren’t big on scifi, posted about my book, & gave me the perfect launch event — I will remember it for the rest of my life. 7. TY to readers! Who are taking a chance on my debut, posting, tagging me and making me feel like all the slog has been worth it. 8. TY to @clclarkwrites and @maryrobinettekowal who gave up ten hours of their life to generously blurb my book. I’m so grateful, and I promise to pay it forward. 9. TY to @goodreads who put THE DEEP SKY on the map 10. TY to @booksaremagicbk @brooklinebooksmith for the events and to @yuandmebooks who came to my event after their bookstore burned down 11. TY to my writer friends and the #2023debuts Slack group who keep me tethered on the good days and moving forward on the bad. 12. Gah! And TY @kylieleebaker and @mayagittelman for being perfect QA partners!! 13. TY to my aunt & uncle who made my Boston event as fun as my NYC one! I’m sure I’m forgetting people but that’s why IG is editable, right? 😅 #debutbook #newauthor

I’ve been off here for a few months (busy w a new job and book four) but popping in to dump a few photos from Bookcon: 1. With fellow panelists @patricknessbooks and August Clarke and moderator @delilahsdawson . It was the very end of Bookcon and a hot, moist room, but awesome to get to chat w some authors I’ve admired from afar for years. 2. Panel action shot 3. @thebooktrope stopped by our signing line sporting this amazing tote bag with our books! 4. @katiewuwrites was giving out samplers for her upcoming debut Madder Lake at the Harper booth — I got to read an early draft and it’s so exciting to know it will be out in the world soon! 5. @katiewuwrites and @kylieleebaker on the escalator at Javits
