Perhaps the most unfairly maligned birds in Australia, due to their tendency to swoop on humans during breeding season, magpies have an altogether softer side, with a beautifully lilting (if a little squawky at times), warble. They can be very tame - you just need to make friends with them, like this couple who have been visiting a YSG team member for years. Hugely intelligent, research has shown magpies can remember and recognise 30 faces, and can do so for many years.
