South LA deserves strong, accessible healthcare.
That is why MLK Community Healthcare continues to speak up about the pressures facing safety-net hospitals across California and the country, especially as federal Medicaid cuts are expected to increase the number of uninsured patients and place even more strain on emergency departments.
We are proud to be a leading voice in this conversation, working with partners and policymakers to find solutions that protect access to care for the people and communities we serve.

Happy #HospitalWeek to the extraordinary team at MLK Community Healthcare!
Doctors, nurses, clinical teams, support staff and so many others come together every day to make care possible. This week is our chance to celebrate all of them.
It is also a chance to recognize the healthcare heroes who may not wear a stethoscope, but whose work touches every part of the hospital: the EVS teams who keep our spaces clean and safe, the IT teams who keep systems moving, the Public Safety teams who help protect our campus, the catering services teams who keep us full, and so many others working behind the scenes.
Because every clean room, working system, safe hallway, warm meal and helping hand matters.
This week, we celebrate every person who keeps MLKCH running and caring for South LA. Thank you for all you do.

Working in healthcare often means showing up for others in high-pressure situations. After a stressful event, it is normal to feel overwhelmed, replay what happened, question your decisions or simply need someone who understands.
That's why MLKCH just launched Peer2Peer—a program where trained MLKCH employees provide short-term, confidential emotional support, a safe space to talk, validation of your experience and connection to additional resources when needed.
The program is currently in its pilot phase in ICU, L&D and our Unite Here location.
Special thanks to our first cohort of Peer2Peer Supporters for helping strengthen a culture of care at MLKCH:
💚 Peter Koutros, Director of Quality
💙 Gloria Salgado, Employee Wellbeing Specialist
🧡 Roy Arreola, Manager, Employee Health
💚 Rev. Dr. Rudy Rubio, Spiritual Care Coordinator
🧡 Shermin Gordon, RN Clinical Supervisor
💙 Colleen Keith, RN Educator, Nursing

Happy Nurses Week to the extraordinary team at MLK Community Healthcare!
Every day, you bring skill, compassion and heart to each patient interaction. As Jasmine shares in the video, care at MLKCH means letting patients know, “we’re in this together.”
This week and every week, we celebrate the people who make that promise real for our patients, our hospital and our South LA community.
Thank you for all you do.

Two years ago, MLKCH opened its Interventional Radiology and Cardiac Catheterization Lab to bring more advanced, timely care to South Los Angeles.
Since then, the program has continued to grow. This year, the lab expanded its capabilities to include pacemaker procedures, including MLKCH’s first leadless pacemaker implantation.
More progress is on the way, including construction of a second Interventional Suite and pending approval to perform PCI, a procedure that can help treat certain blocked arteries on site.
Each step means more specialized care, fewer delays and more treatment options close to home.
🎥 Check out this video from 2024, when Kellye Davis took us on a tour of the facilities.

Not long ago, diabetes-related amputations were the most common surgery at our hospital in South LA, where diabetes rates run 37% higher than the rest of LA County.
Four years after launching our Diabetes Center of Excellence, we had zero amputations among our highest-risk patients.
We got there by removing the real barriers that stand between our community and good health.

We’re proud to share that we have received our third consecutive recognition from The Joint Commission as an Advanced Inpatient Diabetes Center of Excellence.
This honor is especially meaningful given the complexity of the patients we serve, including many who come to us with serious diabetes-related emergencies.
It speaks to the power of a coordinated, whole-person approach to care. By bringing together expert treatment, education, and support, our team works to break down barriers and help patients build a path toward better health.
A special thanks to Nubar Petikyan, who leads our disease management program, for his leadership and the incredible work of his team.

Pregnant moms deserve compassionate, comprehensive care. That’s exactly what they get at MLKCH.
Your path to motherhood starts with our prenatal program. Prenatal care is important because it helps keep both mom and baby healthy throughout pregnancy. Regular checkups can catch problems early, answer questions, and make sure the baby is growing the way they should.
It also helps you get familiar with the team of doctors, nurses, and midwives that will deliver your baby at our hospital.

Dr. Batchlor recently joined NPR’s 1A for a national conversation about the potential impact of looming Medicaid cuts on the future of healthcare in America. As CEO of MLKCH, she brought an important perspective to the discussion, highlighting why these issues matter not only to individual hospitals like ours, but to the healthcare system as a whole.
In her segment, she highlighted our diabetes management program as an example of care that makes a difference. By investing in patients’ health earlier, we can help prevent more serious and costly complications later.
