Springtime at Dyrham Park........ The snowdrops had almost disappeared and now it's the turn of the daffodils, hyacinths and hellebores. This National Trust property does look beautiful in the spring, and I'm really looking forward to tulip mania here. For Thatched Thursday this week I'm posting thatched cottages with finials on. Thatched roof finials are decorative straw sculptures—often animals like pheasants, foxes, or cats—placed on the ridge of a roof as a final, artistic touch. Historically, these finials acted as a signature for the thatcher, a protective charm against bad luck, or a deterrent for birds. Today, they are popular custom choices that add character to traditional homes, with designs often created by master thatchers to reflect the owner's personality.  I adore a thatched cottage and sadly get excited when I see one, but I get even more excited when I see one with a finial on. I love the finial in my post on Saturday with the rats chasing up the roof, but I love Old Fox Cottage with its row of foxes next to the cottage with three little ducks. Do you have a favourite? To start the week I'm posting the quaint village of Castle Combe. This Cotswolds village is so lovely in the spring with daffodils and other spring flowers appearing. It's definitely a place I love to visit regularly and is beautiful in all seasons. In fact I'm not sure which season I do prefer. Do you have a preference? A trip to the Holburne is always a heart warming thing to do. These pictures don’t even include the three incredible exhibitions currently in residence. Take a look back through my grid to find a glimpse of the incredible Schroder Gallery collection, which is worth the entry fee alone (running until September this year). I love the colour palette of The Holburne. The gorgeous, grand, Georgian proportions and detailing, so elegantly pulled together with this lovely scheme. #colourpalette #georgianarchitecture Museums of Britain, Photos of Britain, English heritage architecture, Built environment, historic preservation architecture, georgian architecture, historic buildings, english style, english architecture, doors, front doors, filming location, Georgian property, home of period drama, Visit West, Magical Places, England, English homes.

Eglwys Cwyfan. Or, as locals sensibly call it, “the little church in the sea.” Because Welsh place names are poetic… but sometimes you just want to get to the point. Sitting quietly on a tiny tidal island off the Anglesey coast, this 12th-century church looks like it was placed there by someone who said, “You know what this peaceful little chapel needs? A constant threat of the ocean.” Originally it was built on solid ground. Very sensible. Very normal. Then over the centuries the sea gradually said, “Lovely church. I’ll have that.” So now the church sits inside a protective stone wall like a tiny medieval lifeboat, surrounded by waves, rocks and the occasional confused seagull wondering what's going on! And honestly… it might be one of the most wonderfully ridiculous locations for a church anywhere in Britain. Low tide reveals a path across the rocks, which feels less like walking to church and more like entering a secret level in a video game. High tide? The sea politely locks the door. Inside is simple, peaceful and quietly beautiful. But from the outside it looks like someone built a cottage in the ocean and then decided, “Yes, that seems perfectly practical.” The views stretch across the Irish Sea, with Snowdonia faintly appearing on the horizon like a dramatic Welsh backdrop that definitely understood the assignment. Meanwhile the church just sits there, minding its own business, calmly ignoring the fact it lives in the sea. Honestly, if houses ever get too expensive, this place might be worth considering. 📸 Photo Top Tip: Use the tide and foreground. Pebbles, stacked stones or shoreline textures add depth while the church sits perfectly isolated in the distance. Shooting low helps exaggerate the scale and makes the little island feel wonderfully cinematic. #EglwysCwyfan #Anglesey #NorthWales #HiddenBritain #LensTime

To start the weekend I'm posting the beautiful village of Blewbury, in Oxfordshire. Blewbury is a charming and peaceful village surrounded by hills dotted with trees. The area is known for its beautiful nature walks and rich local history. It is one of several ancient settlements sited around natural springs that rise at the foot of the Berkshire Downs. The A417 runs through the village but if you turn off this road you will find beautiful cottages many being thatched and also a number of historic timber-framed buildings.
