last Friday I won my first ever poetry award 🥹🫣🫨 so here’s a little post to celebrate eeee
“The Arts Queensland XYZ Prize recognises and celebrates excellence and innovation in Australian performance poetry and spoken word.
The Prize, as part of the Arts Queensland Poetry Awards, is administered by QWC and supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. Named after the former 2010 Arts Queensland Poet in Residence, Emily XYZ, who left a deep impression on many of today’s Queensland spoken word artists”
thank you everybody for the support, especially the lovely folks who I got to meet at this event. I also wanna especially shout out:
my sister Sarah,
@_princess.warrior_ , who taught me the value of not just language but speaking up and using my voice,
my other sister Huda
@hudathegoddess , who pushed me to enter this competition and who is a constant source of reassurance and inspiration whether with my poetry or any personal plight I am going through 😂
my first poetry professors, Paul
@paul_b_bellew , and Jarad
@jaradbruinstroop , who taught me so much about the craft, both how to take it seriously AND how to enjoy it.
of course
@qldwriters and
@artsqueensland , the work your team does to keep the light of creative writing burning bright in qld is so so appreciated.
@ruckusslam this team has been holding down slams in this city for years, and has given me endless opportunities to build familiarity with the mic.
@gritweek and
@voices_of_colour who were some of the first audiences for the first drafts of this poem
and lastly - shout out to the two main inspirations for this poem, the boy who I met in Taipei 🐣 and Alysia Nicole Harris’ poem ‘The Crow’s Sugar’.
your boy, serani
