did you have your ma 間 today?
Ma (間) is a Japanese concept of the space in between.
Not emptiness — but meaningful pause.
The silence between notes in music.
The stillness before tea is poured.
The room between objects.
The breath between moments.
Welcome to Japan World of Cha 茶
Cha means tea — shortened from お茶 (ocha).
There are dozens of tea types and hundreds of varieties within each one, shaped by region, cultivar, processing techniques, the philosophy of the maker, and a complex world of flavours.
If you don’t know how to choose — choose by the feeling it gives you ✨
Ma 間 — is Pause
Japanese concept of space, pause, and the meaningful gap between things.
The silence between sounds.
The stillness between movements.
The breath before the next step.
Ma is what allows us to truly notice life.
Cha 茶 is Tea
In Japan, cha is more than a drink; it’s a practice of care, craft, and presence.
Cha time — Ma time🍃
Matcha hand-picking is now extremely rare in Japan. Only a few farming families still preserve this tradition, as it is incredibly labour-intensive.
Matcha harvest brings together neighbours, family, friends and tea lovers.
We believe it’s important to protect and honour these traditions, so we visited one of our partner farms in Uji, Gokashō, to take part in the harvest and show you the behind-the-scenes of this beautiful craft.
So next time you enjoy a cup of matcha, you can appreciate the care, effort, and generations of knowledge behind it.

It’s harvest season in Japan and our journey is just beginning.
Join us as we explore the world behind every cup — the craftsmanship, dedication and quiet beauty of traditional tea making.
Brew some cha and follow OMMA on this expedition through the heart of Japan’s tea culture.
To be continued!
