At 34, King Jonas I of the Kingdom of Lauwiner is Switzerland’s first monarch – and became one without any blue-blooded lineage, declaration of war or political backroom wheeling and dealing. In fact, all it took was a laptop and a few surprisingly generous loopholes in Swiss lawbooks for him to go from plain old Jonas Lauwiner, IT worker, to king of this alpine country.

Lalla Hirayama and Ross McIlroy tied the knot on a wine estate outside Stellenbosch. The Scotsman proposed over breakfast at the stunning Delaire Graff Estate villa in April last year, exactly a year before their wedding day. The beautiful bride glided towards the altar in a strapless lace gown by Blanco Bridal, its bodice embroidered with the names of her four grandparents, the lower half adorned with woven faces of her dogs and horses.

She recently made history as the first therapy dog to comfort a child during court testimony. On 29 April, Toffee sat beside a nine-year-old boy as he testified in the high court in Cape Town, becoming the first therapy dog in the country to officially be permitted to support a child witness in court.

Little Izzy was born with cerebral palsy and for the first two years of her life she knew little beyond the walls of Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital in Coronationville, Johannesburg, where she spent her days connected to breathing and feeding tubes.
Now, the little fighter has finally had her first solid meal and is back home at Bella’s Blessings children’s home in Sundowner, Johannesburg.
