Burnt behind skin, fresh from the sea. Jumped from one fieldwork to another - Marlon reached out for a shoot when I was volunteering to research for the whales and dolphins of our waters, 4 days under the sun, trying to catch up with the sea. Slightly before that, I was hosting for the 11th International Folk Dance Festival, TARI’25 - and he was on the road, traveling across Asia. That was our trajectory My face stung, though it wasn’t peeling. I sometimes wonder why I must. But deep down there was one calling that I cannot ignore. Zonazine 29th Festival de Malaga Shot back in 2023 in PJ/KL, We Are The Jungle got summoned from the memory - selected as one of 7 films for Zonazine, the experimental cousin of Spain’s premier film fest - Festival de Málaga in mid March. ZonaZine is known for its experimental and avant-garde focus, highlighting films that might not fit into traditional, mainstream commercial categories. And here we are, in the midst of this liminal space - the jungle where Amber and Jun found each other, got estranged, and met again. It is my 38th solar return. My go to is to blend in the background, to ponder with existential crisis. Visibility can be often confusing - the curated/ messy/ vulnerable/ imperfect self. What more than the moment of existing, after stars go supernova Today I woke up early, and sent my intentions: come what may, I shall receive. And I did. Indeed I did. Thank you to all wishes and prayers sent, near or far. Whether they are made known, or made in silence - they are all received with love. I wish us all peace, calmness and clarity. Sunny side up is the temperature we’ve been bestowed upon, together with frequent drizzles - unexpected. Heat and humidity crawled up the skin, layered by the kain and lace kebaya top stretching on the surface of my hair follicles: it is my duty, I suddenly realise, to dress to the theme while witnessing the golden days of the yesteryears of these train tracks, like a forgotten ghost wondering on the platform; then on the trains Movement was still intact, bustling half the volume on different train stations. Passengers still caught running to their trains, a little clumsy, claiming sighs from the train operators - When the @easternoriental Express calls, all we do is to move in motion with her - around 60km per hour, consistently weaving through time and space, creating moments which existence becomes so precious as they immediately vanish into thin air - seemingly impossible to capture or recall My favourite moments are definitely the ones that happened during our performance in the Piano Bar, singing while looking out the window, calling the names of the train stations, waving to the people waiting on the platform, and seeing how cars chase the train on Jalan Sentul (I’m not sure if this is the right highway) Swipe to the end for videos 🚂 Till the next train ride! Up on a hill we stayed, this island was in plain sight. There was a port, a bridge, coastal cliffs, the Korean Strait... but what called out, was many years of it being a fishing hub, an ancient trading harbour, and how it functioned as a maritime trading point since the ancient Tamna kingdom. Miyazaki frontier A crystal-clear picture aluminium seeker This view from here is airborne Ghibli Jazz will greet Johor Bahru at the Permaisuri Zartih Sofiah Opera House @pzsoperahouse tomorrow. Can one imagine an almost full house audience showing up for Hayao Miyazaki and Joe Hisashi? Can’t wait to meet everyone, in that space of liminality - painted with everything possibly imagined. I’ve been running, running but the riot huns for you, you, you, you Give me the timeless corridors of your meadows, of your meadows Of course I must say how I figuratively bumped into Nai Palm and Haitus Kayote after watching Laputa (Castle in The Sky). 12 years ago she was writing about this song being a tribute to Miyazaki, who had announced his retirement. Yet he’s still creating until today, with his last work released in 2023, The Boy and The Heron. Castle in The Sky is known for the film’s retrofuturistic style. Flying machines, technology juxtaposed with nature, which also earned the film a reputation in the modern steampunk genre. Who would have thought. Back in week 3 of 2026, Ghibli Jazz and BUKA both took place on the same week. 7 shows in 5 days, with tech run, full run, soundcheck, and all it took for shows to be ready during the week. There was also life, grieve, trips to hospitals, funeral parlours, all in between I was never that attuned to my body, constantly checking in. Even so, I still made choices that took risks. Discipline, rest time, food intake, logistics, mental / physical / emotional capacity. By the time the week ended, I was stretched - flat. My nervous system had hit its capacity. Zooming in and out through the different neural pathways and brain engagement - Ghibli Jazz with music, tonal placement, pulse, phrasing, the Japanese language, Miyazaki’s philosophies and Kenapa Tak Tukar Nama with embodiment, advocacy of real life mirrored in context, fluid openness and structure within the actor’s body. Characters to weave through the different shows, intentionally designed. And most importantly, how do I show up earnestly while I steer each narrative, and honour what was written. At the end of the week (the beginning of the next), picking out house keys from the multiple bags I brought home after bumping out was proven to be a challenge. I saw it. Fragile, and intimate. How did I get by? I did, or maybe I didn’t. They were lived through. Sometimes I wonder what’s it like to be human, and how to celebrate life, as an action verb. I found myself struggling to explain to my loved ones what it means to prepare for an intense, delicate week. Many drives and channels are left running in the open, not shutting down. Perhaps to be human is by merely existing, breathing, living; showing up through it all. That itself is lavish You ask if I’m crazy? Fire away! 📸 by @engkuarmand and @alyaws.evil

Ghibli Jazz took us to places, one that I never knew could land on. Nestled between innocence, wonder and fantasy, the world of Miyazaki’s was certainly a pleasure to travel within - met old(er) children and the new, reliving through specific time and spaces, an absolutely freeing sense to weave in. An audience member (who is a Japanese) wrote to me: Ghibli songs and movies have complicated and deep ideas, that even the Japanese have difficulty expressing through words and singing. She expressed her gratitude. Here I am, wanting to carry every weight that matters - each phrase, to each emotion, setting and story; hearing that, I feel more empowered, less lonely, as we come together and celebrate these great works of Studio Ghibli. It’s been always a dream to sing a full show in nihongo. Now I stand here, 20 years later after singing hanbun, OST of SamuraiX on that one anime competition at KDU Penang. Guess I loved it so much that I decide to do something about it. Some things never change!
