Today marks the end of my 3rd week as @jazz88kbem 's new Music Director. This is my first time being paid to be on air, in an endeavor that's combined pretty much every skill I've ever learned with regard to radio, music, production and presenting. Whew!
I woke up today and remembered it is also the 4 year anniversary of my Grandfather's passing.
I am carrying his spirit, his wonder and compassion, his determination and dedication, with me in everything I do. What I mean when I refer to "culture bearing" is the act of carrying the weight that is joy, grief & responsibility, all at once. It's heavy y'all.
And, I am feeling myself beginning a really intentional practice of purposeful presence in community - showing up for the things I care about and am curious about more regularly and taking up space on a larger scale. I am in love with who I am becoming and I would not be who I am without those who came before me. All I have is gratitude; For everyone who has prepared me for this journey and for those on the path with me

Photos from @yonci and her grandparents, northside Minneapolis royalty!! Beverly and William “Bill” Cottman.
Taken from the 1970s on, the photos show the Cottman’s life in the city as teachers and artists - with Bill a Howard school of Arch and engineering graduate, and his wife Beverly a science teacher at West High School.
Later becoming prominent in the city for Bills photography and Beverly’s dance, the couple created, traveled and documented their lives for Yonci’s fam - as new keepers of the family archives. (Full essay linked in comments!!)

Learning, playing and dancing with and for each other with no pressure, no expectations, just curiosity, experimentation and joy, in a fully Black + Queer space - this is where our creativity takes root, and blooms. Honored to teach and learn from y'all☀️

Tomorrow (Sat 8/23) I'll have a set at the inaugural Mni House Picnic, in homage to the past, present and future of Black American electronic sounds. A word if may:
I rebuke the idea that any single individual, myself included, could bear the entire brunt of representing this lineage. I refuse to let tokens make names for themselves banking off the perception that there lacks an expansive and evolving culture of Black American artistry here in the Twin Cities.
There is indeed, a legacy of abundant Black community (and those in solidarity) invested in reclaiming, preserving and celebrating our cultural output. Gratitude and flowers to the incredible team behind this event, and our community partners for investing in this heritage.
I do what I do, in hopes of cultivating and nourishing an ecosystem thru collaboration + solidarity. Purposeful pleasure and pleasurable purpose type shit. JOIN US!!!
