This is an animatic clip I produced and made as my final animatic of 3 year at university, it’s of chapter 10 (shell and glasses) in which the rebel tribe of boys invade the camp of the original group of the children. This is set at night time so I wanted a lot tension and mystery when it came to the fighting scene and the lead up to it, as in the book after the tribe run away, it’s revealed that there was so much anarchy that the boys didn’t realise that at moments, they were fight each other. 🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨 Omggg FINALLY POSTED, this was a long long journey to finally release, it took time and effort but it’s posted now. My final animatic of uni. There could deffo still be some improvement but I would like to look at this as a healthy starting point to get better and better. Also as there was no real audio of this scene anywhere online I ended up putting together some sound myself off of some free sound design websites as well as using my voice as Jack, @nathcaff_animations as Piggy and @leoleohadenhaden voicing Ralph. Jack Merridew 12-13 years old, 160cm, he is the head of the choir boys, he is the main antagonist of the story. He is driven by his impulsive violence and need for power. In the story he symbolises anarchy and dictatorship. Golding, the author, was inspired to write this story after his time fighting in World War 2; which is why you see the ideas/themes of democracy vs dictatorship. In my design when I read the description of his long black cloak and cap, I decided to try and shift his design towards a militaristic look. So, during my research I stumbled upon World War 2 Japanese school outfits. During WW2 Japan (though not completely fascist) was apart of the Axis powers, and during that time the government really promoted the idea of a strong army/government means a strong nation. A way Japan did this was by making school uniforms which reflected the look of their own army uniforms (which is where the origins of Japanese sailor uniforms stemmed from). In this case where Jack is representative of authoritarianism I thought it would be fitting to go with a design which somewhat resembled the cloaks and headwear the army in Japan used to wear. WOOP WOOP, finally gotten to some of my favourite character design sketches I believe I had the most fun drawing Jack, I really like exploring his character for sharp and rigid shapes. The last environment I have produced is of the field in which Jack and his “army” kill the sow within chapter 8. It is described as a peaceful and tranquil open area within the jungle. Hence why I have used an excess of green, not just because of that fact it is deep within the jungle but also because of when the violent attack against the big happens, the vibrant green will contrast excellently with the blood of the pig. In comparison to my previous post, with the second environment we have here it is of what I personally refer to as the boy’s “base camp”. Location wise it is in between the beach and the jungle, only just a few yards off the beach. I want this to be somewhat of a warmer and cozy environment so there is a lot of use of brown, which comes from the dirt and trees, in comparison to the beach. As this is an environment which the characters wish to recreate their “normality”/their homes. Building the camp site is what the boys believed would be something the “grownups” would do, in the beginning of the book since the boys are stranded, they feel comfort when replicating the actions of what they think adults would have done in their situation. However later in the story I contrast this environment with more saturated greens and purples which emerges at nighttime, which creates a supernatural and uneasy vibe of the setting. First official background for my Lord of the flies art direction. Taken from the first chapter of #lordoftheflies when the boys arrive on the beach, they’re met with beautiful blinding white sand and tropical green and blue oceans surrounding them. Alongside these backgrounds I added in one of the characters, Ralph, to portray the moment where they find the conch on the shore which they then use to call out for any survivors of the original plane wreck. With my art direction as a whole one of the key themes I would include in my portrayal is romanticism. How when the boys first arrive on the island they see it as their “own tropical paradise” where they get to do whatever they want, wether it be to swim, build sand castles or to run and hunt, with no adults or school on the island the boys are free to do whatever they so want. With parallels to the garden of Eden I wanted to create a beautiful scenery which reflects that idea of a tropical paradise. In addition I also created different versions of this background, for different scenarios such as gloomy rain, the ominous night time and the romantic daylight. My official design of Piggy from Lord of the flies~~ General description: 11-12 years old, 145cm, asthmatic, logical, wise boy, Piggy is a significant character within the story, as a main side character. He is what William Golding wanted to portray as “the people” “the civilians”within society. I drew him with many soft round and curved features which contrast with our other two characters harsher lines, as he is a character which you are supposed to emote with throughout the story, by having softer and more rounded shapes it will make the audience feel more empathetic towards his character. His brown hair and eyes tie in again with his “average”persona, of “the people”. Piggy’s significant accent colour is dark emerald green. The main connotation of the colour green is of peace and knowledge. Character design sketches of Piggy from my art direction of Lord of the Flies. Here I tried to really explore character designs through different shapes and mass. As far as characters Piggy, one of the main characters, is known to be “just” almost rigid at times, but also weak and helpless. Conch design~ I put a lot of research into this item as for those aware of this items significance in #lordoftheflies ,it’s an item which not only reunites the boys as a collective but also as a device which captivates the boys interest and need for power. #conch are absolutely beautiful and one of the most attractive shells I’ve ever seen in nature. I really wanted to create a shell which would allure the audience and the characters, one of the ways I accomplished that was through the use of its spikes. The way the stick out like spears from the shell is to indicate/foreshadow the danger that will later come within the story. I did stay true to the design with keeping the light pink colour too, but I added an extra tropical, romantic appeal by adding these orange stripes along the shell itself.
