In a recent interview with my dear brother @jeffscult he asked about the phrase I have “We don’t sing to be good, we sing to be free.”
I’ve never considered myself a “singer” or even a musician… in fact, I was diagnosed with vocal nodes when I was 16… but after my first significant heartbreak, I found that music and singing could be a tool for a more authentic, embodied channel of communication and connection to my heart, soul and my personal experience that seemed to open others up to those aspect of themselves.
We have an innate desire to be seen and known by others that is rooted in the yearning to more deeply feel and know ourselves…
But so often, especially as children, we received some kind of negative reinforcement in a moment of our joyful, free expression that we shut down, and started censoring in a way that blocked something truly precious and alive. 🌺💫
When we can release the judgment about how “good” we are, and how positively received we’ll be, we can give way to something deeper that is SO fulfilling and full of authentic vitality, and recall our connection to inherent truths that are magnetic and compelling even if they aren’t perfect.
In the space beyond the mind, the opinion, and the judgment of how we “should” be (or sound)… we can drop into what really is and who we are.
Full presence with ourselves.
Full participation with the field of life around us.
