Daeyong Lim

THIF #19 Daeyong Lim is a jazz vocalist from Korea. Born and raised in Seoul and he later grew up in Toronto. He’s on a journey to find his sound that is authentic to his immigrant identity while paying homage to his influences. With his velvet baritone voice, he freely explores a wide range of dynamics and emotions and connects with the heart of everyday people. On May 15th, Daeyong will be joined by Matthew Tenedrero and Chris Rice.

🐻‍❄️ My EP is out in the world 🐻‍❄️ This is a project that reflects what I've been focusing musically for the past few years As a person coming from a culture that appreciates silence and discourages self expression, I've had great trouble finding ways to let out what goes on inside me. Whether that’s a thought or a feeling, or even simply sharing my own experience. They say that the quietest person has the loudest mind. And the inner outcries that do not get released create an echo chamber inside us. And today I feel happy and extra privileged to have found this vehicle to express my vibration outward. Holiday Sneak Attack 🎈 Here's a cover of Korean pop song that I grew up singing. The song is from my aunties’ generation. First composed and showcased at a College Song Festival (Korea) in 1993 by a team called Exhibition (김동률 Kim Dong-ryul, my favourite K-composer & his colleague 서동욱 Seo Dongwook). To me, this song is like a precursor to K-ballad with the sincerity from the 80s and 90s of K-pop/ folk music. There is no real way in translating Korean literature into English but here’s my shot (in the comment). I strongly recommend checking out their live performance on Youtube! My Summer of 2025 ended with a duo gig at the @auroraculturalcentre with the handsome @matts.music.journal . This was a part of the Brevik Collaboratory program where I had the honor of being part of the first group ever to participate. Thank you @derek.andrews for your generosity in sharing wisdom and supporting the artists. And Thank you @micahbarnes01 for your unlimited love, encouragement and guidance to the new generation of artists including ME. I am so lucky to work with you once again! So I've spent the past 5 years I've been studying JAZZ music in depth at Humber. SIKE, I got myself exposed to different kinds of music and I was challenged in so many directions. And this immigrant has learned to connect back to his roots as well cuz.. some hinted at me that everything comes down to who I am (thank you). And I am still searching. Here are some of the things I've been upto over the past year. I am full of gratitude and I love this so much that I hope it never ends. YEEHA🌞
