An Edmonton city councillor wants to rename the stretch of 99 Avenue beside the Alberta Legislature to “Forever Canadian Avenue” amid ongoing separatist debate in Alberta. He said the proposed name reflects support for Canada after more than 400,000 signatures were verified on the pro-federalist “Forever Canadian” petition.

A man in Edmonton was kidnapped at gunpoint on May 6 and forced to Calgary in an alleged extortion plot targeting a member of the South Asian community, according to the Calgary Police Service. Police say the victim was abducted from an Edmonton home, assaulted, threatened with a gun, and driven to a residence in Calgary’s Cityscape neighbourhood where suspects tried forcing him to lure the intended target outside. When he refused, he was assaulted again. The target and his wife were later followed and threatened at gunpoint while trying to leave the home before retreating inside and calling police. Officers arrested two suspects that night after stopping a vehicle near Metis Trail and 104 Avenue N.E. Taranveer Singh, 24, Daksh Gautam, 25, Akashdeep Singh, 18, and Pardeep Singh, 24, have all been charged. Gagandeep Singh, 29, remains wanted on warrants. Police say he has connections to Calgary, Ontario and B.C. Investigators say a privately manufactured firearm was seized and believe more suspects were involved.

BREAKING: The federal and Alberta governments have signed an agreement laying out a timeline for a new West Coast oil pipeline, with construction targeted to begin as early as September 2027. Alberta must submit its proposal by July 1, while Ottawa says it will designate the project a matter of national interest by October 1 under the Building Canada Act. The proposed pipeline would transport more than one million barrels of oil per day to Asian markets, though no builder has been announced. The agreement also includes changes to Alberta’s industrial carbon price, which will rise from $95 per tonne to $100 next year, reaching $130 by 2035 and $140 by 2040.

The Edmonton Police Service is warning the public after six men were charged in connection with a coordinated scheme to defraud private vehicle sellers across Alberta, with some suspects still wanted on province-wide warrants. Following a search warrant at a south Edmonton residence in October 2025, investigators seized nine vehicles and identified at least 13 victims. Police say the group operated in teams of two or three, secretly tampering with vehicles during test inspections and then pointing to fabricated mechanical issues, such as head gasket damage or engine oil leaks, to pressure sellers into lowering their asking prices. Suspects reportedly argued with sellers for up to two hours before finalizing fraudulent deals. The vehicles were then re-registered using forged documents, including falsified odometer readings, and used in further offences. The operation covered Edmonton, Calgary, Sherwood Park, Leduc, and Thorsby. Constantin Dumitru, 26, Tiberius Grigore, 34, Cosmin Mustata, 26, Remus Rafaila, 32, Orlando Turcan, 24, and Florin Constantin, 39, collectively face 33 charges including mischief over $5,000, fraud over $5,000, and uttering a forged document. EPS has released photos of the outstanding suspects.
