Goiter? I hardly know her! Because of public health, many serious diseases and health threats that were common in your parents’ or grandparents’ generations are now very rare in the United States. This National Public Health Week (and year-round), we celebrate all who have dedicated their work and studies to public health. Thank you for all the work you do behind the scenes to keep us safe and healthy. We’re ever so grateful for the prevention, protection, and peace of mind your work makes possible. #NationalPublicHealthWeek #NPHW

There is officially a new mace in town. The updated Yale School of Public Health ceremonial mace, which will make its debut at Commencement this Monday, links science and society in campus wood, scientific glass, and centuries of public health symbolism. The mace, created in collaboration with @yalearchitecture , incorporates deep historical symbolism and celebrates the school’s history, vision, and mission. For a deeper dive into the new mace and its creation and symbolism, check out our just-released issue of Science & Society through our link in bio.

We asked YSPH students if they knew what their friends' theses were about. And tested some friendships along the way. On a more serious note, congratulations to all of our students who are graduating next week! We are so proud of the work you've done while at Yale and can't wait to see how you continue to contribute to the future of public health.

We are thrilled to announce the 2026 Association of Yale Alumni in Public Health award winners. Congratulations to Kate Walsh, MPH ’79, BA ’77, winner of the Distinguished Alumni Award, and Dr. Georges Benjamin, MD, MACP, FACEP (E), FNAPA, Hon FFPH, Hon FRSPH, winner of the Award for Excellence. The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes the contributions and achievements of alumni who have had distinguished careers in public health. Walsh, a double Yale alum, is a seasoned executive and public health leader. Over her career, she has served as Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services and in leadership positions at Boston Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Novartis, and Massachusetts General Hospital. She currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of Summa Health, working to create a more proactive, accessible, and affordable system of community-based health care. The Award for Excellence honors individuals for outstanding contributions to the field of public health. Dr. Benjamin is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Public Health Association. He is known as one of the nation’s most influential physician leaders because he speaks passionately and eloquently about health issues having the most impact today. From his firsthand experience as a physician, he knows what happens when preventive care is not available and when the healthy choice is not the easy choice. Congratulations to these outstanding public health leaders. The awards will be given at Alumni Day on June 5 – we can’t wait to celebrate you there.
