Diary • Episode 1
Songwriting is spiritual
I have been reading & writing since a toddler.
My mom read to her belly
in a disciplined way
as a part of her pregnancy🤰🏾
When I was born,
I was named after Maya Angelou
[also my birth month obviously in MAY]
so it made sense to my family
Before I ever
recorded a single song, 🎙️
I was reading at college level
by age 8 ! 📚📝👧🏾
I wrote poems, books,
essays, stories, plays…
My grown up teachers often
enjoyed my creations
I never struggled in
English class
Language arts
Public speech & debate
Reading assignments etc
I slayed the words with ease
I taught myself to rhyme
Devouring books beyond
my recommended age range
it was easy as breathing
My relationship with words
is special to my heart
Studying the dictionary
Thesaurus
& rhyme dictionary
Words were my safe space
In an uncontrollable world
I could impress ppl
I could communicate
BETTER than when I speak
I got positive attention
the better the words got
I was always a dedicated writer
Nowadays,
I apply this to the rhymes
And the songs.
Many raps will
release to the public
Many raps will probably
be used in freestyles
But many raps will
never see the eyes of anyone
other than me
Nonetheless,
they are still important
they are stored accordingly
[I have hundreds of notebooks!
And thousands of single loose sheets of rhymes]
and even if nobody ever hears them,
they’re mine.
& they had to come out of me
as a form of transmutation
