In 2016 XML published ‘Parliament’, a book and research project documenting the architecture of spaces of political congregation. The book explores the double-sided relationship between space and politics by documenting and comparing the plenary halls of the parliaments of all 193 United Nations member states. Parliament is the space where politics literally takes shape. Here, collective decisions take form in a specific setting where relationships between political actors are organized through architecture. The architecture of spaces of political congregation is not only an abstract expression of a political culture, it also shapes this culture. The book documents the plenary halls of all national parliaments in the same style and scale and also provides key data and the assembly hall's location within the larger parliament building. Organized as a lexicon, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, the book for the first time allows a comparison of all national parliaments in the world. Since its first edition in 2016, the book has become a standard work on the architecture of politics and is currently in its fourth edition. #parliamentbook #architectureresearch #politicalspaces #plenaryhalls #architectureanddemocracy #politicalarchitecture #politicalassembly #democracy

In this competition proposal, XML designed an extension for the Serlachius Museum in Mänttä, Finland. The design mediates between the external beauty of the surrounding nature and the internal world of art. The required program has been distributed along a continuous route that connects different programmatic clusters such as galleries, storage, restaurant and office. The circulation between these clusters is bent into a circle allowing for two experiential conditions: on the inside of the circle a series of enclosed exhibition spaces allows visitors to focus on the experience of art whereas on the outside of the circle the continuous route that connects the programmatic clusters allows for alternating these intimate experiences with views on the surrounding nature. The irregular residual space between the programmatic boxes is turned into a Sculpture Garden, continuing the tradition of landscape architecture that is part of the museum’s history. In the same way as the programmatic clusters at the ring’s interior, the existing museum is connected at a single point to the continuous museum route. Rather than provoking an opposition between nature and art – the continuous museum route is sequencing both conditions to exist in their own right. This way, the continuous route is not only organizing the museums’ program, but it also mediates between two worlds that ultimately meet in the experience of the museum’s visitor. #architecture #art #museum #nature

XML was invited in 2017 to design two mid-rise residential buildings in Amsterdam’s Westerpark West, as part of a masterplan by @mvrdv Each tower is envisioned for a specific group of dwellers currently facing housing shortages in the city. The higher building consists of micro-apartments for families. The 85m2 apartments have three bedrooms and a large living room that extend to a planted balcony, offering ample outdoor space. The interior design of the compact apartments integrates architecture and furniture to create compact spaces for affordable urban living for families. The smaller building designed for newcomers to the housing market features micro-apartments combined with a shared living concept. The ground floor offers communal services for residents, including a professional kitchen, laundry facilities, and workspaces, for shared living and relaxing together. Each compact apartment comes with its own private garden balcony, that has a unique tree for each unit. This project aims to address the diverse housing needs of Amsterdam’s residents. #Amsterdam #Architecture #UrbanLiving #SustainableDesign

Construction has started on the XML designed building for the future Institute for NightCulture (INC) in Amsterdam. The mission of this new type of cultural institute is to present, produce and document progressive night culture. INC will function as a cultural incubator at the intersection of contemporary art and nightlife. The architectural concept was derived from the need for sound isolation and absorption and from following the strict preservation restrictions applied to the site by the city as part of UNESCO heritage. The entrance to the new institute is located in a cafe on the ground floor of a 17th century building that will be carefully restored to its initial state. From here, a staircase leads visitors down to a new building inserted in the courtyard behind, invisible from the main street. On top of the new soundproof box that holds the main hall in the courtyard, a garden will be realized, designed by landscape architects Inside Outside. This secret garden provides access to a new house situated on the roof of the institute On October 17, XML unveiled the project at the INC launch event in the @stedelijkmuseum Amsterdam as part of @amsterdamdanceevent Arts & Culture program. Alongside the building, the office also launched a book in collaboration with @stephanpetermann of @volume.architecture.mag , designed by @alfonshooikaas and published by Archis. In this book, 170 voices from the worlds of contemporary art, nightlife and culture come together to answer the same single question: What is an institute for NightCulture? Together, this polyphony of answers creates the foundational framework for the future institute. Team Architect / design lead: @xmloffice Site architect: vdndp Advisor renovation: Rappange & Partners Structural engineer: Bouwadviesbureau Strackee Advisor Acoustics: Event Acoustics Advisor Geotechnics: CRUX / Loots MEP Consultant: M3E Group Fire Safety: @bureau_bouwkunde Landscape architect: @insideoutside_nl Contractor basement: @mbskelderbouw
