Wunika Mukan: The Business of Taste
Still in the spirit of the Women’s History Month, Globetrotter Lab celebrates Wunika Mukan (@wunika ) and her invaluable contributions to the evolving contemporary art scene in Nigeria.
In this installment of People & Spaces, Globetrotter Lab’s Kennedy Ashinze (@kennedyash_ ) meets with Wunika Mukan at her gallery (@wunikamukangallery ) in Lagos for a tour of the space and a deep dive into the evolution of the contemporary art scene.
Since the inception of Wunika Mukan Gallery in Lagos six years ago, Wunika has dedicated her career to promoting the works of emerging artists from Nigeria, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the diaspora. With a background in prominent non-profit foundations, she brings a unique passion and confidence to curating the quirky and edgy artworks the gallery is known for today.
In this conversation, Wunika reflects on founding her gallery during the pandemic and the resilience required to thrive in a shifting landscape. She describes the period around 2020 as the “Wild West”—a time of explosive digital discovery and social media hype. Central to her philosophy is the belief that great progress cannot be rushed. As she says: “Time is God.”

“There should be freedom to create.”
From raising funds at The African Artist Foundation to founding her own gallery, Wunika Mukan’s journey into curation is driven by curiosity, intention, and a deep belief in African artists and their stories.
She speaks candidly about the realities of building within Lagos, from logistical challenges to the barriers artists face on the global stage, while also reflecting on the growing presence of women shaping the arts across the continent.
At the heart of it all is community, showing up, building relationships, and staying connected, even when it feels intimidating. For Wunika, that’s where growth begins.
