Our project - the new Skywell House - was included in the LA Rebuilds Exhibition which opened in Culver City this weekend - a curated survey of projects underway in the rebuilding of the Pacific Palisades and Altadena after the fires of 2025.
The house is located in Altadena, at the base of the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. The lot features north-facing mountain views, views over the golf course to the west, and panoramic views of the San Gabriel valley to the south from the new, second floor. This project replaces a 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom, 3,100 SF single-family home and carport lost in the Eaton Fire. Thank you @sparchs_la_sf for putting this show together.

A trip to Paris with my USC students for a spring break+ exploration of the city's architecture (and urbanism). It was great to visit the many amazing buildings - new and old - of the city; strolling the Boulevards in perfect springtime weather.
1-3: Unbelievably, this was the first time I had visited Corb's iconic Villa Savoye. This was a building that was drilled into to our heads while I was a student. After all these years (95 years old), it mostly still lives up to the hype. Compared to today, it has a simple, rustic feel, but with big didactic ideas. Smaller than I had imagined.
4: Herzog and De meuron's new Tour Triangle pyramid nearing completion.
5-7: A model of the new Cartier Foundation which moved into a Hausmannian block building next to the Louvre; with an installation by Absalon; and an image of the old Foundation building in the 14e which is now abandoned. I love the complexity that all the layers, reflectivity, and transparancy paired with landscape. I hope someone new moves in.
8: Ste Chapelle - my favorite Gothic building
9: Sejima at Samaritaine
10-11: Details of the new Paris Philharmonic by Jean Nouvel. Promenade architecturale extraordinaire
12: The Pompidou - closed for renovations
13-15: A few of the numerous new housing projects in the 17th arrondissement.
16: Yellow sunshade on Rue Mallet-Stevens
17: Gold canopy over les Halles
18: Gold dome over thGalleries Lafayette
19: Hoops in LA Villette
20: The Arc de Triomphe looming while passing by

We don't often post about our interiors, but getting close to wrapping up a kitchen remodel. Painted cabinets, new floors, new appliances - everything. #wtarch #kitchendesign #green
On the way back to Los Angeles - a short stop in Hong Kong. So many new buildings since I was there last - but same hyper-dense urbanism. Somehow the layered, enigmatic strangeness I remembered seemed less present: the problems of being anywhere for only 48 hours. Some of my favorites....
1-5: Tai Kwun Centre. 6: views of some Wan Chai district towers from our window. 7: a view from the midlevels' escalators. 8-16: various shots of the M+ museum and exhibits. 17-18: Zaha's Henderson. 19: another Wan Chai facade. 20: is that wall made with bubble wrap formwork?? at McQueen #ilovehongkong #kowloon #herzoganddemeuron #mplusmuseum
Opening of the @citylabucla #smalllotsbigimpacts competition exhibition in the new @aia_la exhibition space. Our project - The Space Between Us - received "special recognition" in the competition. Glad to be part of this interesting collection of projects which provide a range of approaches to building on a selection of the city's unused properties. Our project shares one of the illuminated display columns with @freelandbuck !

We are excited to be awarded "Special Recognition" in the @citylabucla #smalllots housing competition. Our proposal - THE SPACE BETWEEN US - builds upon currently underused ideas in Los Angeles - but with demonstrated success elsewhere: expanded and accessible ownership options, flexible living arrangements, mass timber construction, and forthcoming code updates allowing single stair egress solutions. Our entry draws from new-sobriety thinking and a desire to build it - with a simple, essentialist, easy-to-build system which also allows for flexible use, flexible demising, and flexible ownership. South facing 'landscape baskets' provide an armature for community space with shared, ultra large porches.
#NON-NUCLEAR FAMILIES: People’s living requirements change over time considering age, partners, children, and parents. Here, a growing family can easily expand into adjacent spaces as neighbors move out - to accommodate a grandparent, for example. Or, an empty-nester may choose to downsize, selling a portion of their unit to support other i terest in their lives. Some of the capsules host two rooms – allowing a parent to be together with their child apart from the extended community.
#OWNERSHIP: allows for affordable investment into domestic living arrangements over time - building equity and generational wealth while allowing spatial change as household needs evolve. We proposed a 32-unit Co-Housing Building using a Community Land Trust model which can evolve in the total number of dwelling units over time as generations pass.

Images from a recent site visit to some of our buildings currently under construction. 'Experiments' in dense, co-living projects where we are exploring variously shaped windows in some of the smaller rooms in an effort to give the effect of expansion of the space / counteracting the square-ness of the volume. #wtarch #shapeform #contrast #windows #coliving #housing
Semester is over! Mostly models at presentation from my students in the Core IV studio at #harvard #gsd. Hoping to share drawings in futue posts after final hand-ins are received. Hats off to the amazing production of some very large models. This semester the students studied 150 bedroom, co-living units in #chelsea with individual student considerations of possible future adaptation to forecasted social and climatic changes. Thank you for the hard work and a memorable semester! #housing #newtypologies #architecturemodel #mattebuilding #cambridge #trays #housingisahumanright #wtarch
