There’s an opposite to déjà vu. They call it jamais vu. It’s when you meet the same people or visit places, again and again, but each time is the first. Everybody is always a stranger. Nothing is ever familiar. And then there's nostalgia - it's delicate, but potent. In Greek, "nostalgia" literally means "the pain from an old wound." It's a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone. New places bring new friendships, which are surrounded by and experienced with emotions of all sorts and intensity. Some places feel right, without bringing on déjà vu, nostalgia or jamais vu. Quiet corners of new cities, when wandering alone, where you can connect with one individual stranger and share a moment, are where we can find out as much about ourselves as we can in the deepest conversations we have with our best friends. It’s how we learn from others, when we barely grasp where they come from, what they do every day, what they really care about. It’s places like White Wabbit Records in Taipei that I’ve felt closer to a stranger than I ever have in London. No concept of what was expected of me, browsing the store and talking to the solitary person working the shop that Sunday afternoon—I was the only one in the store to shop—asking what I should be listening to while I was in Taiwan, and what the best music he had heard recently was, launched an entire afternoon of sharing stories and music and laughs.
