Florida plans to shut down the high-profile immigration center in the Everglades known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” The New York Times reported.
Tuesday’s article reports that the Department of Homeland Security deemed the state-run immigration facility too expensive, costing taxpayers an estimated $1 million daily, and that some private vendors have struggled to cover the costs.
Vendors were also told that the detainees in the center would be moved from the facility by the start of June and that the center would be broken down in the weeks after that.
However, it is unclear where the 14,000 current detainees will go afterward.
The state has yet to receive over $600,000 in reimbursement, which it requested to keep the center operating.
