The Other Father Christmas by Serena Holly (my shared pen name with @priscillamante_author for this title) has been shortlisted for Discover Book of the Year at the British Book Awards, the Nibbies.🎉 The Nibbies are a bit like the BAFTAs of publishing. They are hosted by @_thebookseller and have been running since 1990 and are judged by industry experts, authors and journalists. A few years ago I was shortlisted for Editor of the Year and received a special commendation in that category. Now, in 2026, a book I co-wrote and published through Storymix Books has been shortlisted💪🏾. The Discover category celebrates books from marginalised communities, often from indie publishers and small presses. We share the shortlist with some extraordinary titles exploring war, racism, survival and identity. And then there is our book, a younger middle grade Christmas adventure about a Black British grandad and his grandson, filled with elves, a gingerbread escape room and hot chocolate on tap. The Other Father Christmas might look like the odd one out. It isn’t. Joy is our activism, and choosing joy right now matters. Every major publisher said no to this book idea when I pitched it from @storymixstudio - they said the book would struggle to find its audience. So we secured a grant from @deutschebank and @mewe360 , we crowdfunded through @kickstarter , we printed with @claysltd , packed boxes ourselves, worked with indie bookshops and built a campaign with very little budget. In a year when inclusive publishers and agencies were closing, Storymix Books built its own route to market. This nomination belongs to the whole team: My co-writer Priscilla Mante, and the wonderful illustrator @shahab_illustration , @beckychilcott @clarewhitston , @wendywoomakes @hazelholmesreads @sineadgosai @murray_in_london @irempulluk @bouncesalesandmarketing and partners like @the_rebel_reading_society @noirkringle_blacksantauk @serlinaboyd and @cocoagirlbrand @theselinabrown and @bbbookfestival Festival, @rubysreads_uk @imaginemestories @parrot_street , and @kellyjade_n @wokebabies

I had the best time last week celebrating the publication of The Unmorrow Curse with friends, family and wonderful publishing folk. The launch party was at @roundtablebooks in Brixton who were incredibly welcoming. Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate with me and bought every single Unmorrow Curse book in the place! Planning on having my chat with the phenomenal @lawrencepatrice up on my author YouTube channel soon (so keep an eye out) but in the meantime here is a little video with highlights from the event. Have to give special thanks to my publisher @uclan_publishing , my agent @chrisxmasbel and my good friend and author Sara Grant for helping to organise the party and supporting. Special thanks to @saranasralla for holding the fort at home. And another MASSIVE shout out to @tolaokogwu and @goz_i_am for making this book launch video possible - thank you 🙏🏾 😍🤩 #unmorrowcurse #booklaunch #grateful #weneeddiversebooks #authorofinstagram

Earlier this year I was pretty burnt out and was trying to finish revising my novel The Myth Keeper. I hired a hut from @coolcoastalhuts and something unlocked. Words started to flow and I was grateful that the sea and the Mersea landscape had worked their magic. A bigger breakthrough perhaps was the feeling I had that all writers deserve time in a space like this glorious hut I hired. And what if it was a hut specifically geared to writers both in layout and resource? For those of you that don’t know me I have worked in publishing and with authors for 20 years and am an author myself. I am passionate about supporting creatives and I think The Write Beach Hut might be a small thing I can do to help nuture and foster creativity. I want to do that in a way that means that the cost to hire is accessible to all writers regardless of income and so watch this space as I figure out stuff along the way. As it stands right now the hut has been purchased (pictures to come) and work has started on the refurb (gulp). Excited for the story to come. #amwriting #creativewriting #colchesterwriters

Just over a week to go until our next How I Write session. We're thrilled to welcome @cerrie.burnell for this event. An author, actor and activist (and keynote speaker for this year's SoA Awards!), Cerrie is perhaps best known for her work on CBeebies. The role earned her critical recognition and a devoted fan base and she has gone on to write 15 children's books. During our online session Cerrie will be in conversation with author, editor and screenwriter Jasmine Richards @writeonauthor and will offer a glimpse into her creative routines and practices. Our How I Write events are free and open to all so if you're not a member yet this is a great opportunity to get a taste of what we have to offer. Book now via the link in our bio. And finally... this event is part of the wrap around series for our SoA Awards and Summer Party in June - tickets for that are now on sale and we do hope you'll join us.

In 2018, a research project revealed that only 1% of children’s books have diverse main characters. And in 2019, another report found that fewer than 2% of British children’s authors are people of colour. Where does that leave us now? @Storymixstudio founder Jasmine Richards (@writeonauthor ) examines diversity in children’s fiction and why it has never been more vital for today’s generation and their parents, carers, and teachers. 📚✨ Read Jasmine’s piece on The Novelry blog today.

A spellbindingly inspirational afternoon with the one-and-only Jasmine Richards at Stepping Into Stories! And such a powerful message for these budding book creators to take away: ‘Reading is the key to the kingdom - for anything you want to do in your future’. Jasmine captivated this hall full of children, sharing her journey from a book-loving child, through editorial publishing, founding the incredible Storymix and writing her own phenomenal books. Imaginations were whirring as Jasmine invited the children to step into their own stories using a selection of brilliant props to spark of creativity ✍️ Thank you so much, Jasmine, for lighting up so many minds with such an empowering, joyful and inspirational event! 🙌📚 #childrensbooks #festival #schools #london @stories_fest @writeonauthor @storymixstudio @papercatbooks @ibc_reads

This Thursday I’m bringing my magical objects workshop to Stepping Into Stories for Year 4 + Year 5! ✨ This is one of my favourite workshops because it turns even the most reluctant writers into full-on storytellers. We use weird and wonderful objects to unlock ideas, then build characters and plot twists from there. Can’t wait! See you Thursday @stories_fest 🫶🏾

Utterly delighted to see The Other Father Christmas in the December round up in the @guardian this Saturday. As the first published title from Storymix it means a lot that the book is resonating with readers young and old. Kids publishing has been in the spotlight for the wrong reasons recently with the news that a household name has been dropped by their publisher but please know so many authors are out here creating books to delight and inspire children. @imogenrussellwilliams what a job it must be to read all the titles that come your way - thank you for your hard work - we appreciate the space you make for our work.
