Thought to start December with the cover release of my latest nonfiction SAFAR--it's out June 11, 2026 from @bloomsburybooksus and I couldn't be more thrilled to watch this book on its journey.
And I can't wait to share the stories of the women in this book as we follow Punjabi Sikhs traveling from South Asia to settle in the American West transforming food, culture, community and prayer, creating a space that is unique, welcoming and in turn, American. Pre-orders always help, so thank you in advance. Link in bio.
I'll be giving you more info in the next few weeks, but for now, here's the cover. Isn't she a beauty?
I started this year promising myself to explore, open myself to things I wouldn’t otherwise, write, and intentionally learn from others. I’ve met amazing food people, creatives, friends, dear ones and fallen in love with a city that has always been an emotionally conflicting place for me— given the history of colonization that I come from. This month has taught me that both can be true. My people and new friends and artists can be amazing AND the history of what the ancestors of this country has done to mine can continue to remain, a brutal one. At least, in this Year of Yes, I acknowledge them both and celebrate the good. So while I said I’d explore the outside, I curiously got access to my own thoughts within. And again, BOTH are good. #londonthoughts #london #portobello #immigrants #immigrantfood #desi #immigrantstories #desistories #madhushreeghosh #safar #khabaar #khabaarco #2025 📸 @gstephengreer
With great humility, joy and anticipation, I wanted to share that my second food and travel narrative, will be published by @bloomsburybooksus / @rowmanandlittlefield Spring 2026. SAFAR: TRAVELING HOME - Exploring Culture and History Through Punjabi Food in the American West, focuses on three immigration waves out of Punjab (pre- and post-Partition), the people who made the American West their home through their food, culture and religion, and four women of those waves whose lives tell us about what immigration does to food and a people. I can’t WAIT to share the stories of the women, and what food, culture and community means to them in a world and a country so divided and I hope we start a conversation on community, borders, immigration and love. Thank you @deni_remi and as always, @danamnewman for your trust, patience and faith in my storytelling. Thank you @khabaarco community for the joy. Thank you @ajit_jaspreet@punjabitandoor5 for being my home in San Diego and so many more of my people who continue to help me tell these stories. More in a bit. For now, THANK YOU! #safar #punjabi #bloomsburyus #bloomsbury #foodnarrative #desi #foodstories #immigrantstories #desistories #khabaar #khabaarco #madhushreeghosh
Such an honor to start the book tour in three weeks on June 4th— in San Francisco!
—where so many South Asians landed, built lives, farmed, grew food and their own roots. The first gurdwara or Sikh temple was built in Stockton, a few hours from there… a vibrant farming community that called Punjab and Central Valley home. All this and more in SAFAR … from the perspective of Punjabi women I got to meet and know. Their stories make SAFAR what it is.
I have the privilege of being in conversation with the amazing author @samina.ali.writer author of the beautiful memoir Pieces You Will Never Get Back at @omnivorebooks on June 4th. Stop by, join the conversation, say hi! It’ll be so good to see you♥️

Farmers Feed Our Souls
Sometimes you need to go to the farmers and get things that feed your soul. Thank you @alavida_farm and Omar for the heartwarming flowers that were local, grown right in Bonita at Sweetwater Community Garden— bright, happy, local flowers that gave all of us such joy.
Find out who your flower grower is, my loves. And visit their farms. It’s such joy ♥️

Thank you, @salonofficial for the opportunity to share the story of The Dog, The Great Pause also known as the pandemic, and how I started my vegetable garden in San Diego. A reflection of food, history and how we belong, this is partly a little love letter that my pup, my city and to celebrate how we find home. Parts of this essay are in my second food and travel narrative, SAFAR— out June 2026 from @bloomsburybooksus

I thought to share more on SAFAR— and the women who make the journey from South Asia to create community, life, love and food in the American West.
Meet Jassi Saini— daughter, daughter-in-law, mother, restaurant owner, Sikhni— Indian and San Diegan. Part of the fourth wave of immigration of Sikhs, Jassi represents the young generation— enterprising, community and faith-minded, building family and a culture quite their own in California.
SAFAR is forthcoming June 11, 2026 and I can’t wait for you to meet Jassi. If you’re anywhere near @punjabi_tandoor_san_diego don’t forget to say hello to @ajit_jaspreet and tell her I sent you. ♥️

Cuevas de Mitla or the caves at Mitla is THE magical experience Oaxaca promises you.
Archaeological findings in caves near San Pablo Villa de Mitla show the transition from teosinte (wild grass) to domesticated corn— over ~10,000 years ago. Under the stewardship of Mitla community leaders who welcomed us to explore the archaeological site of the first discovered domesticated corn, it was an honor to walk with Zapotec leader Ceril who maintains these sacred caves with his brother Pepe & his community members for the next generation.
To join in a ceremony celebrating the ancestors, the sea, the land and the deities who bestowed corn on the Zapotec was a humble honor for all of us. And for that, we remain grateful to the people of Mexico.

Oaxaca mountains are another dimension completely! The ride up through the cloud forest taking us to Dona Martha’s kitchen, to be greeted with coffee, breakfast enchiladas and a walk through herbs, flowers, agave and pines was exactly what we needed for our souls. Sometimes it’s the slow walk in the woods inhaling the crisp air, sometimes it’s communal cooking, roasting tomatoes and morita chilies or even crushing the aguacate in molcajete gives the heart a joy we hadn’t known. Coming down from the mountains we are still on this high— this joy of learning, healing, and knowing that Oaxaca will always have my heart.
