Mauthausen Memorial is a preserved Nazi Concentration Camp near Linz, where more than 10,000 people were murdered and many, many more suffered unimaginable horror during the Nazi annexation of Austria in the 1930s/40s. The camp was finally liberated by Allied forces on 5th May 1945.
Visiting was a sobering and upsetting experience, but important to see the reality of what can happen when oppressive, divisive and dehumanising political ideologies take root.
The juxtaposition between the haunting buildings and the beautiful Austrian countryside in which they are located was hard to make sense of.
I was particularly struck by the plaque honouring the American heroes who died liberating the camp, reminding us that where once the USA helped save the world from the Nazis, now the Trump MAGA nightmare openly embraces their ideas.
The phrase "never again" has never been more important.
