Capital House Music Festival Salute to Sam "The Man" Burns 2026 Sam Burns always had a way of recognizing talent before it was fully realized. When DIYANNA MONET was a teenager, he simply told her  "Your future is bright." He wasn't offering flattery, he was stating something he already knew from within. Today, Diyanna is a Washington DC based multidisciplinary artist , blazing the scene, and spreading communal joy. Her DJ sets channel something intentionally nostalgic and entirely alive with the energy of a House Party. She is anchored in the New Jack Swing frequencies  but reimagined for right now! Sam saw it coming! Alethia Tanner Park 227 Harry Thomas Way, NE 11AM - 10 PM COME EARLY, Come EARLY, COME EARLY, stay late! #samislove #newjackswing #housemusicfestival #blackculture #dclegacy

Tennessee State Rep. Justin Jones made headlines last week after burning a Confederate flag inside the state legislature in protest over a newly approved congressional map that critics say dismantles Tennessee’s majority-Black district and could secure an all-Republican congressional delegation. Speaking with KPFA News, Jones, who was raised in the Bay Area, said that despite facing retaliation from Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton, whom he referred to as the “grand wizard” of the legislature, the fight for voting rights is growing from California to the South. His comments come ahead of a National Day of Action taking place Saturday, May 16, in Selma and Montgomery, with satellite actions planned nationwide amid renewed battles over voting rights and redistricting across Southern states. Jones warned there is a “civil war being waged on the South with this new Confederacy intent on dismantling and destroying multiracial democracy.” KPFA’s Lauren Schmitt spoke with Rep. Jones about racial gerrymandering, the future of the Voting Rights Act, and what this moment signals nationally for democracy. Tune into the Pacifica Evening News tonight at 6 p.m.

The Nakba was the beginning of a continuous, systematic and systemic occupation, exile, and apartheid that has defined the Palestinian experience for over 75 years. Through the violence of the founding of the state of Israel, Palestinian families were separated and a people’s right to return, to exist freely on their own ancestral land, was denied. Today, the echoes of the Nakba resound in the violent occupation of Gaza, the blockades, home demolitions in the West Bank, the silencing of Palestinian voices in media and politics, and so much more. And yet, through all of this, music (especially jazz and liberation music globally) has stood in solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Just as jazz was born out of the Black freedom struggle in the U.S., Palestinian artists are using sound to document survival, reclaim identity, resist erasure, and secure a future where they have the right to exist. Justice has no borders here at WPFW. From Selma to Sheikh Jarrah, or Harlem to Haifa, the rhythms of life and resistance connect us all. . . . Tune in today to Radio Free Palestine to catch a rare glimpse into the stories on the ground. Where else can you hear Palestinian voices and truth, uncensored, uncompromised and rooted in Palestinian self-determination? At WPFW and the participating stations (flyer on the last slide)

Are you READY for Radio Free Palestine?? 👇 In the spirit of solidarity and action, RFP is an annual, global radio broadcast commemorating the anniversary of the Nakba-- the ongoing displacement, occupation, and apartheid inflicted on the Palestinian people since 1948. In 1948, over 750,000 Palestinians were violently expelled from their homes in a wave of ethnic cleansing that sought not only to remove them from their ancestral lands, but to erase the memory of them. And it's still unfolding today. Checkpoints, sieges, bombing of hospitals, the outlawing of mourning, and more that has plagued Palestinian peoples for decades. It's what's been happening in Gaza, the West Bank, the annexed Golan Heights; it spreads into Lebanon as we speak, and the diaspora at large who are forbidden by Israeli law to ever return home. What we're all witnessing is a U.S.-backed military occupation that has escalated into what the global majority understands is a genocide. It's colonialism in real time. But to exist is to resist, thus even in the rubble, Palestinians resist with words, marches, memory, music, and more. And you can stand in solidarity with them from your Radio. . . Tomorrow, WPFW and stations across five continents come together to air Palestinian voices and truth, uncensored, uncompromised and rooted in Palestinian self-determination. Radio Free Palestine amplifies the stories mainstream media is burying, offers historical context, and connects listeners to the deep roots of Palestinian resistance. What’s happening in Palestine isn’t separate from what happens here (wherever you are): * the increasing police militarization in your city * the surveillance and “security” tech tested on occupied people and deployed in our communities * your tax dollars funding bombs that level schools * and countless more. Palestine is your struggle too. Tune in this Friday from 5am to 7pm at WPFW 89.3 FM or participating stations! (or download the WPFW app (Pacifica) to listen from anywhere, all day, on the go!) Free Palestine! 🇵🇸

How many times has the US government firebombed its own citizens on its own land, within the borders of its own country? This is some of the heat we're brining you today. The MOVE bombing was a landmark moment in the 70s that pointed to how far local governments, thru the police, were willing to go to "solve problems." The firebombing, targeting a black family of no more than 20 people, wound up killing children, burning many homes, and displacing dozens more residents. In this day and age, the lessons we've learned from such an act of local police terror, as well as from the organizing around MOVE (before the bombing, and since re: political prisoner advocacy) may be more valuable than ever before. But what do you think? Do you know about MOVE? Were they on the right or wrong side of history? Also, do you remember when this song came out? (Check the post on our IG to hear the one) . . . You can support the station in these dire times and keep this storied truth-telling tradition alive. Just text WPFWFM to 801801 to make a donation, OR visit wpfwfm.org to do so right from your desktop. WPFW is making the world a better place--one broadcast at a time, for 49 years strong.
