I continue to experiment for my part on EdgeLand, a 2yr project involving 22 artist with the aim to capture the changes along Suffolk coastal region.
6 mths ago at the start of the project I asked myself whilst thinking about my contribution.
“Do I know what I shall research?” Answer “No”
“Do I know what my contribution will look like? Answer “No”
I took solace in words of Wyatt Tinder,
…”if we knew exactly where we are going when we embark on a journey, that is precisely and ONLY where we ever go……Have we actually gone anywhere? “
I am still on the journey ….

In the 17th century the human specie 'discovered science' and the way became clear for the appropriation and exploitation of land, its people and its produce. The dream of autonomy over nature and its uncontrollable forces became reality and little by little, decade by decade, century by century nature became a resource for power and wealth. A commodity to be dominated. An accepted way of life. Four hundred years on from the 'industrial age' for humanity to survive much will depend upon the self righting systems of natural processes. This is a sample of my Alternative Photography made today using only natural chemicals and vegetation. It is an early experiment as part of Project Edgeland, a 2 year art project mapping the changes to Suffolk coastline. @edge__land@alternativephotography_com #suffolkcoast #seaweed #edgelandproject
My 2026 started with reading frightening articles about AI. I was specifically interested in an essay by Guy Tal, a photographer and philosopher. He discusses how AI is stealing the true joy of art photography - the creative imaginative process of discovery and sense of accomplishment. He asks us to question any sense of eudaemonia coming from pressing ready-solution buttons or requesting pre-formed compositions from ChatGPT, Nano Banana Pro or similar.
For EDGE LAND @edge_land a two-year arts project exploring change on the Suffolk coast, I plan to uncover more about Suffolk's intertidal liminal verges. As a photographer, I shall go out seeking the story of our Salt Marsh - experience it, explore and enjoy photographing it - with camera and camera-less techniques. I am committing that any device used will be a deliberate extension of my own personal expressive photographic faculties – albeit limited!
