A small detail with a remarkable history - an original Ordnance Survey bench mark at Wormsley, found on the old stables at Home Farm.
The horizontal line at the top of the arrow indicates a known height in relation to mean sea level. These marks were once a vital part of surveying across Britain, with more than 500,000 carved over many years.
Using a ranging rod and theodolite, surveyors could measure and record levels elsewhere from this fixed point - helping to shape everything from buildings to landscaped grounds.

Venue Highlight
The Walled Garden, Wormsley.
One of the most stunning walled gardens in the Uk.
The gardens are hidden away deep in The Wormsley Estate, Buckinghamshire.
Lovingly restored me in 1985 the garden is divided up into quadrants each serving a different purpose. The gardens have something for everyone and makes the perfect location for many types of event - The Croquet lawn is suitable for larger structures. The Orchard is a stunning ceremony spot. The Theatre garden ideal for receptions or as a break-out space for the late night party/dancing and the vegetables gardens can also be used for receptions with structures over fallow beds.
If you would like to learn more about hosting an event at Wormsley, we would love to hear from you.
