The Corpse Squad 9 years apart. Thanks to the excellent talents of @felixkunze we have a time capsule of @ginocaspari and my interludes at @the_explorers_club Annual Dinner, this year an appropriate theme of ‘Oddesseys’- bringing together fellow field scientists, exotes, friends, rivals, expeditioners from around the world. Dr. Caspari won his vest of course in the legendary sheep squatting competition in Tuva (I got a bottle of deer blood for my 2nd place performance), his whip and fox hat in travels around the steppe. I had a nice matching one that unfortunately got eaten by bugs. This year I decided to commemorate my Irish passport with the National Tartan. Grateful to have this friend and comrade throughout the years cutting our own path, though our adventures have left us somewhat scathed. The classic refrain ‘It’s not the years, it’s the mileage’ definitely applies. But every mile with you my friend has been more than worth it. But gala dinners aside, we embark on another chapter of our Oddessey this week, a secret shipwreck mission we hope to share soon… wish us luck! ‘To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.’ -Tennyson

Warning: Human Remains Super cool mission today: dropping off @ginocaspari camera to @kolarivision for an infrared conversion, so he can keep using this technology to uncover mysteries of ancient mummies around the world. Earlier this year, Gino and his co-authors — archaeologist Aaron Deter-Wolf (@archaeologyink ), tattoo artist D. Riday (@totemic_tattoo ), S. Pankova and M. Vavulin, published a paper in @antiquityjournal on the tattoos of Scythian ice mummies from the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia, dating back over 2,300 years. These are extraordinary tattoos, mythical beasts locked in combat, deer, big cats, fantastical composite animals rendered in classic Scythian animal style. If you haven’t seen them, look them up. Using near-infrared photography and photogrammetry, the team revealed details invisible to the naked eye, including evidence of what kinds of tools were used and how the tattooing was actually done. Working with @totemic_tattoo who specializes in ancestral tattooing techniques, they compared the ancient marks against experimental tattoos made using hand poking, subdermal, and incision methods. So today I am the delivery guy. Go check out @ginocaspari work and the full paper in Antiquity. Photos: @antiquityjournal @natgeo Bag: @nomatic

Teaching as exploration. Hear me out. *small Hail Mary spoilers if you haven’t seen the trailer* Exploration gets measured in feats, records, and endpoints- but it’s not the physical achievement alone. It’s the knowledge you bring back. As a young classroom teacher I learned quickly that learning is never a one way street. My students taught me as much as I taught them. From journeys of the mind come the seeds that reach the mountaintops and back. When explorers share what they discover they teach us, about ourselves, other species, the earth, cultures and histories around the world. How we can solve big problems and understand our world better. In my time with on expedition, in the field school @menorcashipwreckproject , or working with leadership or on the Explorers Club Teacher Fellows Program, it is the pursuit of knowledge in community that has driven me. Hail Mary is a bit of escapism - but there are real astronauts heading to the moon with Artemis II. I believe a future astronaut is sitting in a classroom right now who could inspire the world to be a better place- and a teacher to inspire them. More to come. #artemis #nasa #explorers #education #projecthailmary

It was a remarkable experience to visit the island, learn about it's history and meet those who endeavour to uncover it's deeper mysteries hidden underwater. #35mmfilm But the best description goes to @worldwidewallace ✍️ " Looking for lost shipwrecks is a romance with the bottom of the sea that lures obsessive vagabonds from the far edges of the map. We sweat, we squint, we argue with the ocean, and somehow Haddaway is asking Baby Don't Hurt Me' like the sea hasn't been doing exactly that for centuries. Thanks to Riccardo for making us look sexy while we were mostly just salty and feral. In a photo filled world, I like the honesty of analog, the in-between moments, unpracticed poses, and the beautiful mess of actually being there." Last call for tickets ⚓️ This Thursday, Feb 19 I’m giving a talk aboard the historic Research Vessel Robert Gray at Pier 25, Manhattan. All aboard 630PM Tickets: link in Bio One of the hardest parts of archaeology is sitting on the best stories for years. We can’t always share immediately, peer review takes time, research can be competitive, and publicizing finds too early can attract looters and tomb raiders. But in an intimate night on the water with @thevoyagersclubllc , I can share more of what the field really looks like through stories, photos, and film. I’ll be showing work from excavations of warrior-nomad kings on the Siberian steppe with @ginocaspari , animal-style art, burials, and traces of conflict, plus updates from @menorcashipwreckproject , including a discovery none of us expected that changes the whole story of our site. See you on deck ⚓️ #menorcashipwreckproject #explorersclub

Variety is the spice of life! Over the years it has been great to work on all different types of projects with @ginocaspari While I can say that he definitely prefers to rough it, you might be surprised to hear that he does in fact sleep in a bed most of the time (though often still in a sleeping bag) Next Thursday Feb 19th I will be sharing both @menorcashipwreckproject and Siberia stories aboard the Robert Gray @thevoyagersclubllc (rescheduled and updated tickets) check the tix in my (worldwidewallace) bio. Also mark your calendars for April 9th when the good Dr. Caspari himself and @lieberliner and I will be presenting on the incredible score for @amongthievesfilm Applications for regular enrollment and scholarships open fall 2026 campaign: /join #worldwidewallace #underwaterarchaeology #menorcashipwreckproject #archaeology #expedition

When you’re excavating a 700+ year-old shipwreck buried beneath harbor sediment, every find is like a puzzle piece. Archaeology is an exercise in uncertainty, working through possibilities, following fragments of evidence, and slowly inching towards a clearer picture of the past. Sometimes that fuller understanding and certainty takes years. Each artifact, each timber, each layer of sediment adds to the story. At our field school, I’m often asked what level of diving is required. We’ve had everyone from Open Water divers to seasoned Instructors. The real common denominator? Almost everyone is new to underwater excavation, because opportunities like this are rare. Under the close supervision of our archaeologists, participants learn how to carefully uncover a wreck. Lacey and Deno, joining us from the Hong Kong Chapter of @the_explorers_club were a perfect example. Deep technical divers with serious wreck penetration experience, adapting those skills to shallow-water excavation on a complex archaeological site was a big success and they really excelled. #worldwidewallace #underwaterarchaeology #menorcashipwreckproject #menorca #explorersclubmember

The R/V Robert Gray is a ship that has seen a lot in its 90 years. Swipe for some of my favorite stories ⚓️ This coming Thursday , February 19th 6-9 @thevoyagersclubllc will be hosting a dinner on their vessel anchored at Pier 25 Hudson River Park, and I will be giving a talk on searching for shipwrecks, escaping Siberia, and if you are lucky how I was exorcized of a giant demon with red eyes. All proceeds go to their non profit mission as a vessel of opportunity supporting field research around the world. #worldwidewallace #voyagersclub #explorersclub

This coming Thursday night Feb. 19th, I will be presenting aboard the R/V Robert Gray hosted by @thevoyagersclubllc for an all-evening gathering of stories, maps, and misadventures, from expeditions in Menorca to Siberia and well beyond. I’ll be talking fieldwork, travel at the edges, and what it’s like to chase history and archaeology across oceans and ice. ⚓️6–9 PM ⚓️Pier 25, Hudson River Park Tickets-> link in bio The deck tent will be very cozy, heated, a blazing wood stove, warm bodies, warming drinks&delicious food, and the kind of merriment that only happens when you’re floating slightly on a frozen river at night. A little context: The R/V Robert Gray is a historic, purpose-built research and expedition vessel, home to scientists, explorers, and educators working on maritime history, oceanography, and field science. All proceeds going to the non profit mission of R/V Robert Gray as a research vessel conducting field science expeditions. #worldwidewallace #explorersclub #voyagersclub

This is one of a fair number of @the_explorers_club flags that went to space. In 1970, Apollo 13 launched for the Moon, and two days in, an oxygen tank exploded. The mission instantly shifted from landing on the Moon to one goal only: get the crew home alive. Power was lost. Heat dropped. CO2 levels rose. Improvisation, engineering, and calm decision-making became the difference between life and death. Commanding that mission was Capt. Jim Lovell, who carried this Explorers Club flag with him as they looped around the Moon and back to Earth, never landing, but making one of the most extraordinary voyages in human history. I had the privilege of spending time with Capt. Lovell in 2018. A true explorer in every sense: thoughtful, humble, generous with his stories, and completely down to earth (no pun intended). Exploration isn’t always about reaching the destination. Sometimes it’s about surviving the journey, and bringing everyone home. Thousands of photos. One living site. Our tech lead @brunopares capturing the wreck one frame at a time using 3D photogrammetry to build a precise digital photo mosaic of the site. This isn’t just cool tech. It’s how we see the shipwreck as a whole, track changes over time, and document every phase of excavation. Part of our @menorcashipwreckproject field school is to familiarize participants with the different uses of photogrammetry underwater and on land, and give practical skills in this important tool. Photogrammetry has revolutionized archaeology turning fragile, fleeting moments underwater into permanent, measurable records that can be studied long after the dive is over. Thanks to @colin_dietz for some additional broll shots 📹 #worldwidewallace #underwaterarchaeology #menorcashipwreckproject #menorca #explorersclub
