A recording of my live set at Matchstick Piehouse from last year is now available to stream and purchase on Bandcamp (link in bio). This was a really enjoyable set which I still have fond memories of.
Unfortunately, Matchstick Piehouse has since been forced to shut down due to financial pressures from their landlord. In support, all proceeds for this release will be donated to the friends and former staff of Matchstick Piehouse.
Many thanks to @crossovers.collective for inviting me to play, and to @h.murd for mastering.
London Pattern Club was established in April 2023 with the aim of exploring algorithmic creative practices – such as live-coding and hand-weaving – through talks and workshops.
From October 23rd, we’ll be running a monthly craft group at the Ivy House in Nunhead.
This will be an opportunity to explore pattern-based ways of making - such as braiding, weaving, knitting and crochet - as well as tools for computer-aided design.
Two performances coming up next week!
The first is on June 12th at Matchstick Piehouse, Deptford, for @crossovers.collective . I’ll be sharing some new music and visuals, as well as participating in a live improv set.
Next is on June 15th at The Baths, Hackney Wick, for @ikavapii ’s monthly Niche event. I’ll be contributing some live-coded sounds to a collective jam!
A couple of p5.js sketches inspired by @martinlorenz ’s ‘Flexible Visual Systems’. This approach involves taking a simple shape, dividing it into quarters and using different arrangements to create different motifs.
I love how this approach can yield hundreds of combinations, each with their own unique feel. I had a lot of fun watching larger patterns emerge from changes to the base shape, scale and design rules.
For our next workshop, we’ll be looking at parametric design in Processing/p5.js.
Parametric design involves using rules, or parameters, to shape objects. The process is widely used by artists, designers and architects to create interesting 2D and 3D shapes.
Processing - and it’s browser-based equivalent, p5.js - is a creative coding tool with support for 2D and 3D drawing, animation, user interaction and more.
During the workshop, we’ll be learning how to use p5.js to create simple shapes from mathematical rules.

Went a bit off-piste with these - this chapter’s based on optical mixing, which is when we perceive two or more colours as an in-between shade.
I had a lot of fun playing with these - it’s interesting to see how the choice of shape, scale or colour scheme changes the overall effect.
Another couple of p5.js sketches, this time based on plate X-1 of Interactions of Color.
This section of the book focuses on additive and subtractive colour mixing, and using colour to create the illusion of depth.
I’m trying to brush up on my p5.js skills, so here are a couple of sketches inspired by Josef Albers’ Interactions of Color, plates VI-3 and VI-4.
Albers’ aim with these examples was to show how our perception of a single colour changes relative to the whole.
I’ll be aiming to post a few of these each week, so stay tuned for more!
Next Wednesday at 7, we’ll be exploring kotekan, a rhythmic playing style common in Balinese Gamelan music.
We’ll be learning how to create kotekan-style rhythms in Strudel, a web interface for live-coding music.
If you have a laptop and headphones available to you, please bring them. You’ll still be able to participate without them, but this will help you to make the most of the session.

For our last Pattern Club session, we looked at the history and development of hand-weaving and it’s relationship to live coding.
After the session, we practiced hand-weaving on cardboard looms. I love the variety of form, repetition and symmetry in each of these designs!
For next week’s Pattern Club, we’ll be learning how the loom gave inspiration to computer programming.
We’ll be looking at modern interfaces to design weave structures, such as AdaCAD, and making our own weave patterns using miniature looms.
