On June 9, Carney made an appalling announcement. By committing to massively increase Canada’s military budget, adding $9+ billion overnight, he is giving an enormous gift to Trump, the weapons industry, and the whole military industrial complex. Millions will suffer and countless lives will be lost as a result of this announcement.
This is a promise of a war-filled future.
Just as building pipelines entrenches a future of oil extraction and climate crisis, the decision to ramp up Canada’s military budget, escalate a global arms race, and purchase new warships, fighter jets, and space missiles entrenches a commitment to wage war via these weapons systems for decades to come.
This is a promise of devastating austerity.
Carney is robbing the country of the resources needed to address the actual security threats facing people across Canada - climate change and ecological collapse, disease epidemics and public health emergencies, and poverty coupled with the ballooning costs of housing and food.
Spending hundreds of billions of dollars on outrageous, aggressive, and wildly overpriced weapons systems like the Golden Dome is a slap in the face to everyone in Canada struggling to get by or to imagine a life for their children in a country that sets new wildfire records nearly every year.
If ever there was a time to separate the genuine threats to our security from the self-interested goals of Trump and the weapons industry, this is it.
Instead of a foreign policy based on ever-increasing militarization and warmongering in lockstep with the US, we must develop one based on diplomacy and peace building.
We’ve got our work cut out for us.
It’s time to build our power and cross-movement resistance to stop those who will use the anxiety of this political moment to drum up public support for the arms industry and military spending. It’s time to forge an international solidarity that stands with all people facing war and military violence. Let’s get to it.

Today, delegates attending the Canadian Labour Congress convention in Winnipeg, MB have the chance to course correct Canada’s labour movement to stand on the right side of history and against Zionist intrusion into our workers’ movement.
Delegates have forced critical changes to a resolution to declare all goods, services, and relationships with israel hot cargo and to cut ties with the Histradut — an israeli « trade union » and arm of Zionist terror against Palestinians. This resolution must go back to the convention floor for delegates to vote on, democratically.
From citrus groves planted on stolen Palestinian land with the stolen labour of Palestinian workers to weapons components from Canadian based companies that produce hundreds of thousands of bullets, cartridges, fighter jet components, and more, we need an international picket line against israel. Withholding labour is a powerful act and a concrete step to answer the call from Palestinian trade unions to stop the genocide.

Yesterday, the undersigned student groups, workers, unions, and faculty sent a letter to the University of Toronto demanding that they revoke their sponsorship of CANSEC. CANSEC is an annual Canadian defence and security conference that hosts weapons manufacturers and governments accused of war crimes and human rights abuses.
UofT’s sponsorship marks the first time in CANSEC’s history that a public university has sponsored the event. We reject this move towards militarism by the University and demand that UofT uphold its very own mission in the protection of human rights and the advancement of justice by:
1. Revoking their sponsorship from CANSEC
2. Not sending representatives to attend CANSEC
3. Implementing a divestment policy for weapons companies and other companies that violate human rights, similar to the University’s policy on fossil fuel divestment
4. Refusing to partner with weapons companies complicit in war crimes or human rights violations for research or commercial purposes
CANSEC is a weapons trade show hosted annually in Ottawa by the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries, running since 1998. The event brings in more than fifteen thousand registrants from around the world, including military leaders, government officials, and arms dealers, and deals are made each year involving weapons and surveillance technology used in global conflicts and human rights violations. CANSEC enables industries of genocide and mass destruction to people and our planet.
There are over 300 exhibitors, including ELBIT SYSTEMS, Israel’s industrial arm and its largest supplier of weapons, specializing in advance drones for surveillance purposes, land systems, airborne systems, as well as cybersecurity, and ROSHEL DEFENCE SOLUTIONS, a Canadian company that provides armoured vehicles used against Palestinians and migrants.
So we need to shut down CANSEC. SAVE THE DATE, plan accordingly, & book off work if you can.
