At the beginning of the year I completed this restoration for Ai Weiwei and Kettle’s Yard.
This display case was originally used to show Chinese earthenware in the British Museum. It is now part of Ai Weiwei’s collection and current exhibition at Kettle’s Yard. My work involved making my own scratch tool to recreate the tiny mitred joints.
It’s the last few days to see this wonderful exhibition.

It's that time of year again where @workshop_bateman is heading off on a monster cycle ride in aid of @duchenneuk , @baron.brewing makes a beer, @harry.wyld does a fantastic illustration and I print a tee shirt to celebrate.

or @workshop_bateman will have a few with him when he is spinning some tunes at @deadtimebeers on the 25th of april.

Thank you @miers.mary and @countrylifemagazine for including me in a great article in this weeks edition. All about the owners and craftspeople bringing historic houses back to life, it focuses on my and Greg Meeson’s on going involvement at @stowehouse . Mary came to visit us at my workshop to get a true understanding of how we worked on the project. We are included alongside @patrick_baty who it has been a genuine pleasure to have worked with at Stowe. And some kind words from Anna McAvoy, co-director of Stowe House Preservation Trust. Thanks also to photographer @sibuckphoto who somehow made my workshop look beautiful.

‘Conservation woodworker Matt Bateman highlights how furniture conservation is naturally a sustainable process, as it focuses on repair rather than replacement in all cases. He describes:
Only where deemed absolutely necessary is any new timber used in a repair. Even then, this new timber will likely be salvaged from something previously written-off as waste. Whilst repairing a three-legged stool at Kettle’s Yard, only the wedges used to fix the legs in position were new wood.’

Well, it took me a lot longer to post up an Instagram update than it did for me to cycle from London to Paris. But I did it. 300km in 24 hours. An incredible and humbling experience for many reasons. Tomorrow I'm taking part in the Duchenne Dash - Duchenne UK's signature fundraising event, that challenges cyclists to ride 300km from London to Paris in 24 hours.
My friend Gareth's son Harry was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy when Harry was two and half years old. I’m doing this ride for Harry and others like him who live with this disease.

Harry’s New Wheels 5.2% pale ale. Named for my friends son Harry Halpin who lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
This is the next fundraiser for @duchenneuk and @duchennedash and comes from my collaboration with Jack Baron of @baron.brewing .
I first contacted Jack last year and since then we’ve been working on producing this beautiful brew. Released a month before the Duchenne Dash 2023, 24 hour bike ride from London to Paris.
A fresh and hazy pale ale perfect for the spring supping and for post-ride recovery!
Collaborations like this cannot happen without the kindness, open-mindedness and good energy of people like Jack B. Thank you Jack. I hope this inspires others to do similar projects.
