Campo Expandido XVII by Raymundo Sesma, created Summer 2008, located at the North 4th Arts Center. Raymundo Sesma is an internationally recognized artist based in Mexico. His artwork is abstract geometric and uses a blue and green color palette. In an article about the mural, Sesma says this art “frees the mind of whoever observes and listens.” The Working Classroom apprentices on this project were Bianca Benavidez, Aron Kruchoski, Jose Lopez, Michael Lopes, Lauren Martinez-Burr, Patricia Neddeau, Dylan Reames, and Stephanie Zarrasola. Michael Lopez, (WC alumni, artist and co-founder of Risolana) mentioned that “working with Sesma has inspired me to think big. It’s an area that needs to be recognized and noticed because of the people of North 4th are doing great things.” The same year, Sesma also created an installation mural for WC’s “20 Artists, 20 Years” exhibition at 516 Arts. Today North 4th Arts Center is managed by the ABQ Sign Language Academy.
Please join us for our last two weeks of Open Studios before we break for the summer. Happening through April. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 2-7pm at Working Classroom.
“Creative Currents” led by Eric J Garcia. Creative Currents is on the south wall of Working Classroom’s building. This mural was in honor of our relocation to and purchase of our building in Barelas. Sponsored by the Albuquerque Community Foundation, the FUNd at ACF, PNM and the National Museum of Mexican Art. Alejandra Carmona was the project leader and Rosie Thunderchief was the Mural Assistant alongside Eric. 5 youth apprentices assisted - Quela Bruch, Natalie Cruz, Aron Kruchoski, Lizbeth Miscles, and Adriana Ortiz.Pictured is a river flowing from one end of a mural to the other. On the river is a person in a boat giving away a stack of books. The end of the river is reaching up in a hand crushing a fighter jet dropping bombs. This signifies the importance of education over war and profit. The border along the bottom is covered with shadows of various plants with an indigenous style motif representing the land that we are on.
Friday, March 27th from 4-8 PM Working Classroom will partner with @panerabread to help fundraise for summer projects. If you want an easy and yummy way to support us, head to the Panera near UNM at Central and Girard for dinner. Use code FUND4U for online orders.
