In this house we believe in standing in solidarity with oppressed people, not just in our city, but all around the world. Many Portland businesses showed their support for the Black Lives Matter movement during the George Floyd Uprising of 2020, and we commend them for that. Right now Palestinians are facing a genocidal onslaught from the Israeli state in which thousands of people have been killed and around one million have been displaced in Gaza. This ethnic cleansing is fueled by our government’s financial and military backing, and funded with our tax dollars. The struggle against racist police violence and imperialism abroad are inextricably linked. Look no further than the joint training exercises in Israel between the Israeli military and many US police forces, including the Portland Police, dubbed the “deadly exchange” by Jewish Voice for Peace. Americans in particular cannot remain silent as our government funds genocide abroad and trains our police forces with the tactics of an occupying army. We call on other Portland businesses to show the same solidarity they did for Black Lives Matter in 2020 with Palestine today. We wish to express our solidarity with Palestinians not just in words, but as a business with our money. Every night for the next week we will be donating 10% of all our sales to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, an organization that provides humanitarian aid and emergency medical care on the ground in Palestine. Our bartenders will be joining the bar in donating 10% of our tips as well. Free Palestine. - Workers Tap co-owners

Do you already belong to a union but love to hear from and talk to other union members? Join us for Union Chats, a new learning and discussion series from Workers Tap & Cafe. Today is International Workers’ Day, May Day! May Day is an official holiday in 95+ countries in the world. Ironically, it is not a recognized holiday in the country where it originated, the United States. May Day’s roots are in radical strike action and the demand for the eight hour work day. In 1884, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions (later the American Federation of Labor) held a national convention in Chicago. One of the resolutions to come out of the convention declared, "Eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labor from and after May 1, 1886." The demand eventually unified much of the radical left behind it. After two years of organizing by countless trade unionists, anarchists, and communists, hundreds of thousands of workers began a general strike on May 1st, 1886. All of them unified around the eight hour work day demand. 40,000 workers in Chicago went on strike on May 1st with a series of marches, rallies, and speeches. By May 3rd their numbers swelled to 100,000 workers on strike. At a rally at McCormick Reaper Works the police attempted to disperse the striking crowd, and the cops killed two demonstrators while injuring many more. On May 4th, a rally was called at Haymarket Square to discuss the actions of the police and continue the call for the eight hour day. The rally was attended by families and children, and the Mayor of Chicago even showed up as an attendee. Near the end of the speeches the police claimed speakers were using "inflammatory language” and attempted to disperse the crowd through violence. In this commotion a homemade bomb was thrown into a crowd of police. The police responded by opening fire into the crowd, killing at least 8 civilians with many more wounded. The police blamed anarchists for throwing the bomb, while others claimed it was an undercover cop trying to incite crackdowns. *Continued in comments* /press

Today! One day only special. Pineapple Upside Down Matcha. On April 28th, 1945 Italian Partisans captured the fleeing fascist dictator, Benito Mussolini, in a village on Lake Como. He spent some time upside down in the town square so all could see that the dictator had been truly toppled. Join us in celebrating the toppling of dictators and fascist regimes tomorrow. Bella ciao

Announcing a new cider collab on tap! We’re working with Son of Man to bring you a special cider for the summer, Mondragon. As with all their ciders, it is a Basque style cider: bright, wild, and dry. Mondragon uses 60% Jonagold apples from Upper Valley Farms on the backside of Mt. Hood in Parkdale, and 40% Muscadet de Dieppe apples from EZ Orchards in the Willamette Valley. It has tasting notes of golden raspberry and honeydew. But why “Mondragon”? Mondragon Cooperative Group is the largest worker co-op collective in the world. It includes 70,000 workers in over 80 different cooperatives. Mondragon is located in the Basque Country (within Spain), and was formed in 1956 despite harsh political conditions during Franco’s fascist dictatorship. Their democratic and collaborative processes ensured their survival through difficult political and economic conditions in Spain, and they are still thriving today. We collaborated with Son of Man to offer one of their outstanding Basque style ciders named in honor of Mondragon; to tie our little collective to their huge one. Available now!
