Rather than chasing a perfect yard, Brandon has created something more personal. He describes his outdoor space as a lifelong project that reveals itself a little more each day.
At his South Austin home, goats and dogs are part of daily life in a space that feels equal parts urban farm and creative escape. With every season, it continues to evolve, something Brandon hopes might inspire others in his community to rethink what a yard can be.
Through caring for the land, he’s learned that progress is meaningful and the process is part of the reward.

Michelle doesn’t just have a backyard, she has a second living room. It’s where games are played, dinners are shared, flowers are picked, and neighbors stop by to chat (sometimes about chickens).
Over time, the space has evolved alongside her. Raised beds rebuilt with her parents, a new patio where a tree once stood, and a garden that keeps expanding because she simply can’t stop planting.
For Michelle, it’s not really about what grows there, it’s about what happens there. Kids and pets playing, friends gathering, and all the small moments that turn a backyard into something that feels like so much more than the sum of its parts.

For Jorge, home doesn’t stop at his front door. Living in a condo in Austin, he has a small patio with potted plants, but most of his energy goes into the community spaces around him.
Since moving in a few years ago, he’s noticed empty areas where plants didn’t come back after freezes or repairs, and instead of leaving them as is, he started filling them in himself.
He’s planted everything from prickly pear and yaupon to a palo verde tree he grew from seed, using what he has and can find. These days, he’s even joined the HOA board and put together a simple landscaping plan so he can keep building on it.
He does it because he enjoys it, but also because he believes the space we live in goes far beyond our own four walls.
