Odd Balance
11: 7 guests - 3 guides - 1 dog
Self-care, self-love
Repeat between purges
Plenilune above
Firm wet earth is
Rich and will hold your bod
Healers feel sincere
You’re cared for. God-
Won’t be speaking to you tonight dear,
Other fish are frying
Kim, there’s people that are dying
It’s ok to be a bit let down
Expectations were profound
At least it wasn’t expensive
Yuck, that thought’s so offensive
Counting dollars incense
Sometimes I wish I could recommence
I suppose that’s why I sipped the medicine
Pickles looking at my salad like let us in
Predicaments need tending
Balance is qi, no cutting locks or circumventing
I’m believing it works in ways unseen
A dream, a subterranean stream

I made this mini painting recently. It’s the first time I do an abstract pixelated piece like this… it was a little tricky to make and photograph (colours aren’t exact) but I’m happy with how it turned out.
I’m curious what you think of this direction and if anything comes to mind when you look at it? I’ve got my own references but I’ll keep that a secret unless you want to know by DM 🤫

I recently had the pleasure of illustrating the article “Hydro Not Included” by Boshko Marik for the Summer Issue of @maisonneuvemag . The piece explores Marc-Antoine Goyette (@goyetteorgohome ) and Gabriel Lacombe’s “Chic Bidonville,” a deluxe bedroom built in the middle of an abandoned factory—meant as a response to Montréal’s housing crisis.
Available now online and in print @maisonneuvemag .
My illustration was inspired by Valérian Mazataud’s photos of “Chic Bidonville”.
Slide 13 is Seun Kuti at Glastonbury
Much of my research material has been provided as gifts and suggestions from friends and family. Thank you for being so inspiring and supportive ☺️🫶
PS. I’ve got a lot of other podcasts to recommend if ever you’re interested 😅 just say the word!
I’d love to hear from you though—
Where are you finding hope or clarity these days?
What could housing of the future look like?
With love and resistance,
Wolfe

Little painting I made recently for my love @nitimueth 💗
Was my first time doing a photo transfer with mod podge but it won’t be the last! All the tutorials said to wait like a day for it to transfer but I just put the heat gun to it and waited 10mins and it worked just fine 🤷♂️. Let me know what you think!

I made this painting in Montreal while planning for my artist residency at ArteSumapaz. My preparations and initial thoughts, represented through browser tabs. The terrace view of the mountain range, merely an idyllic concept, conjured through the pixels of my computer screen. Dreams of learning español muy rápido...
The fourth tab in the painted browser is “Canadian Mining in Colombia.” I initially thought of exploring this issue while at ArteSumapaz, since 50% to 70% of mining activity in Latin America involves Canadian companies¹, with the Colombian National Agency of Mining stating that Canadian companies hold over 40 mining titles for copper, silver and gold in Colombia². As you can imagine, this industry has serious social and environmental ramifications.
However the most urgent environmental concern I have been hearing of in the area is drought. With an El Niño year compounded by climate change, water levels in the Chingaza reservoir, which supplies 70 percent of Bogotá’s water, are at historical lows - just 16 percent. To conserve, officials have divided the city into nine districts, which will experience 24-hour disconnections from the water grid on a daily rotation. This coincides with the spread of wildfires across Colombia, neighboring Venezuela, and nearby Guatemala. This is having a significant impact on agriculture and the ecosystem.
There’s been a good amount of rain in the past few days at least, hopefully more coming! 🤞

I recently listened to this episode of @nprcodeswitch called “Can you travel the world - ethically?” and I found it refreshing to hear a candid conversation about tourism and its complexity as an industry/cultural norm. Here’s an excerpt of the interview with Shahnaz Habib:
“...during the medieval times, travelers kind of had to throw themselves on the hospitality of the places they were traveling to, right? So there was a relationship there where the traveler, the person who came to this place, was at a disadvantage. They needed the place and the people in that place, more than the people and the place needed them. Whereas the way we travel now, we have this sense of how tourism is good for these places, how we as tourists are, you know, helping, you know, pouring our dollars into the economy, how these places really desperately need our money. And so tourism has kind of changed the story about travel so that instead of us looking for hospitality, we feel like we’re already sort of, like, saving these places that we travel to [...] And we’re looking for customer service.”
I am so grateful that this residency is deeply engaged with the local communities in the area, and much of the team is Colombian. Getting to exchange and make friends with Colombians while working here feels really meaningful; but I know that this is only made possible by the fact that we have enough time and a framework to connect. Being a tourist can feel superficial and exploitative, it is a position I sometimes struggle to reconcile with. My passport privilege has gotten me to many corners of the world and I don’t take this for granted (but sometimes I accidentally do!).
What is your opinion on travel, be it for leisure or work?

I’ve had the pleasure to partake in an artist residency at ArteSumapaz in the beautiful mountains of Colombia! It's been a well-needed time of creative exploration. ArteSumapaz is an intentional community that practices and promotes non-violent communication, self-determination and healing through art. This place feels truly magical, an inclusive and uplifting microcosm of a society I would love to see. Anyone can pitch a workshop, encouraging skill sharing and camaraderie. Colorful birds sing all day while Jurassic bugs crawl all over the place, commanding respect and admiration. As soon as something expires it immediately becomes nourishment for something else; this place gushes with life.
I made this painting in Montreal before starting the residency. My planning and initial thoughts represented through browser tabs. The terrace view of the mountain range, merely an idyllic concept, conjured through the pixels of my computer screen.
...As you can see I've also had big dreams of becoming a fluent Spanish speaker pero me falta disciplina en los estudios... Un día!

Last year there was a call out for artists to make a design that would adorn the stairs of Confederation Park in Ottawa. The project description was as follows:
“Canadian Heritage is seeking a dynamic, impactful image that conveys the theme “Journeys.” This theme asks artists to reflect upon the idea of a journey as a means of understanding and growth. Artists may consider the physical and inner journeys that have shaped them, or the collective journeys undertaken by people and communities across Canada in the past, present, or even the future. Artists may also consider the visual implications of the “journey” from one point of the stairs to another.”
My response was a piece entitled “Crossing”. The sketch was not selected (wonder why 😅) but I like it, so I thought I would share it with you…
Crossing tells the story of the Canadian Pacific railroad, a journey of progress and development that made Confederation possible. Although its impact on Canada was transformative, the construction of the railroad was a complex process that had profound social and environmental effects that can still be felt today.
Immigrant and marginalized communities played critical roles in the creation of the railroad. Chinese workers came by ship to build the B.C. segment of the railway through challenging and dangerous terrain. Once the trains were in operation, Black sleeping car porters, largely from the USA and the Caribbean, worked tirelessly, catering to passengers’ every need. The railway’s fragmentation of the land displaced many Indigenous communities and severely impacted traditional ways of life. The bison and salmon, both migratory animals, represent the natural world that the railroads have intersected and impacted. Mountains were crossed with great difficulty, but to this day, people from around the world travel by train through the Rockies to take in their majestic beauty.
Through this work, I hope to emphasize the interconnectedness of these many journeys and how together they have shaped the rich history and identity of the multicultural Canada we know today.
