Metro’s Board of Health said dozens of Davidson County children — some with life-threatening medical conditions — could be at risk of losing their health care coverage if they can’t verify their citizenship status. “It’s a huge threat to life for kids with significant disabilities and for families that can’t afford to support their kids,” Dr. Morgan McDonald, Metro Board of Health member, said in a Thursday board meeting. Last September, Metro’s Board of Health said they received a notice from the Tennessee Department of Health saying they would need to verify the citizenship status of everyone enrolled in a public benefit program. That includes Children’s Special Services, which provides access to care for children with physical disabilities from birth to 21 years of age. “The process for disenrolling kids 18 to 21 has begun, and there’s conversation around disenrolling kids zero to 17,” Dr. Sanmi Areola, Metro’s Director of Health, said. In the heart of Smyrna, visitors can find a hidden gem that specializes in educational programs for kids. These programs are geared towards helping children learn while keeping them active, healthy and igniting their imagination. For nearly a decade, Smyrna’s Outdoor Adventure Center has been a special addition to the community. And as part of the Smyrna Parks and Recreation Department, Parks Director Mike Moss said the center is becoming a staple of its own. “We used to say it’s the best kept secret in Middle Tennessee, but when you see the crowds that we get, that is not the case anymore,” Moss explained. “It was a big deal for the town. It gave the Parks and Recreation Department Indoor Space, which we didn’t have a whole lot of.” Full story by Elisheva Wimberly at WKRN.com

Smyrna’s sports history runs deep — and it’s got some notable baseball stars. Though maybe not the first name that comes to mind, one of the town’s earliest sports stars is former catcher John B. Gooch. Decades later, another sports star emerged from the Rutherford County town: Sonny Gray. Today, Gray’s a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. Before he made it to the big leagues, though, he was a star baseball player and starting quarterback at Smyrna High School. “Sonny was obviously such a gifted kid — from the time I knew him when he was just probably 10 or 11 years old all the way up to when he was a freshman and dominating the baseball field as a freshman even,” Gray’s football coach while at Smyrna High School, Philip Shadowens, told News 2. “Then being our starting quarterback for his sophomore, junior and senior year in high school — it was a fun process to get to coach him.” Read more by Jessica Barker at WKRN.com

#ICYMI: Gov. Bill Lee signed new legislation to create an extra layer of protection for homeowners’ associations and homeowners who fall victim to theft or fraud by their HOA or the managing company. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Jeff Yarbro (D-Nashville) and Rep. Caleb Hemmer (D-Nashville), will require HOAs to maintain a blanket fidelity bond, or a type of insurance that covers losses if someone handing HOA funds steals it or commits fraud. It stems from allegations against Gasser Property Management Inc. that claim the company stole thousands of dollars from various HOAs it managed across Middle Tennessee. Hemmer told News 2 the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the claims. Under the bill, the bond must cover the HOA’s total reserves, plus at least a quarter of annual assessment income. Hemmer said this will ensure HOAs and homeowners are made whole in the rare event that HOA funds are stolen or fraudulent activity occurs. Full story by Tori Gessner at WKRN.com

One program in Smyrna is helping women build confidence, awareness and life-saving skills. The Smyrna Police Department is offering a free women’s self-defense course designed to prepare participants for real-world situations, both mentally and physically. Inside a Smyrna fire hall, women of all ages suit up and get ready to learn how to defend themselves. Participants are given a chance to practice strikes, escapes and quick decision-making under pressure. Organizers said the class is ultimately about empowerment giving women the tools to recognize danger early and respond effectively if needed. For some, the course has become a family experience. Participant Genevive Fields said she’s now taken the class three times, even bringing her daughters along. Full story by Lexi Wilson at WKRN.com

This Saturday, a 1-mile loop of downtown Nashville will be blocked off from vehicular traffic to make way for Walk Bike Nashville’s Open Streets series following the annual Tour de Nash bike ride. For about a decade, Walk Bike Nashville has partnered with the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure to promote a car-free environment downtown for Open Streets, offering families a way to walk, bike, skate, scoot, or stroll in a safer manner. According to Walk Bike Nashville Executive Director Meredith Montgomery, the family-friendly event “makes room for everybody to enjoy being active and visiting new businesses and connecting with community” free from the dangers vehicular traffic brings. The free event takes place on three Saturdays in the summer each year. This year’s summer series starts on May 16, then takes place again on June 13 and July 11, according to Walk Bike Nashville.
