Fifteen years ago, I graduated from Central Baptist Theological Semibary and soon after became Pastor of Progressive Baptist Church (PBC).
I’m grateful for the training, the friendships, the faculty, my colleagues in ministry, and the opportunity to continue using my gifts in service to God and community.
Looking back, I can clearly see how those years helped shape my preaching, leadership, vision, and commitment to the work we are called to do. Grateful for the journey. Grateful for the people. Grateful for the assignment.
After speaking with Pastor Walter Lanier (@wjlanier ) about his path to community building in his return from law school in Michigan back to Milwaukee, the conversation led into a discussion of conflict resolution tips, which is a much needed skill for community development.

Milwaukee has been dealing with student absenteeism and low reading outcomes (math too) for a long time.
This isn’t new.
A recent column by James Causey talks about using incentives to help get students to show up to school—and honestly, that’s worth exploring.
But I think there’s something deeper going on.
We already have a lot of the pieces in place:
schools, libraries, community groups, faith institutions, partners across the city.
The question is whether those pieces are actually working together. Working together and transparency are serious issues here.
Because in other cities like Detroit, progress hasn’t come from one idea—it’s come from alignment.
So maybe the real question isn’t just how to get students to show up…
Maybe it’s:
What would it look like to build an aligned, connected, transparent system that students, community and parents can understand and can easily show up to.
Curious what others think.
