Yoshitomo Nara fucks.
There's so much to say about this exhibit, let alone his work in general.
One thought: There's something else about seeing bodies of work from an artist that was made during very distinct, memorable years of your life. That feel familiar to you, only to find lyrics and references to numerous songs and artists that you were also listening to at the same time included in sketch after sketch, page after page. I can clearly remember how that music felt to me at the time. Seeing someone crystalize and communicate similar ideas, putting parts of how it made them feel/think, in a way that resonates/mirrors my own in different but parallel way was a very personal and intimate experience.
If youre in LA, and enjoy art museums, check it out. It was only supposed to be there from july 20 - july 21. There was a brief extension due to covid, so besides two pieces which were retracted by their private collectors, its all still there. It nearly didnt even happen. Which in itself adds to the exhibit's story in its own way.
Tl;dr : nara fucks, listens to good music, and is pretty perfect for alt/indie inclined peeps born in and around the 90s
